Ed Orgeron Says He Used To Drink “12 To 15” Energy Drinks Per Day When He Was Still Coaching

No wonder Coach O was always running around yelling “Go Tigers.”

Ed Orgeron, better known as “Coach O,” has clearly been enjoying his post-coaching life. With his successful college football background, he could go back to coaching really anytime he wants to. However, he seems to be really enjoying his time off (guess you could call it retirement), which is being funded by that last severance check that he hilariously and happily accepted from LSU.

If you somehow missed that part of Coach O’s story, here’s the video that went viral when he and the SEC powerhouse parted ways:

I love that video so much… I can’t ever pass up including it when I write about the incomparable Coach O.

Hard to believe that Coach O and LSU separated back in October of 2021. Seems like it was just yesterday that the swamp monster known as Ed Orgeron was stomping up and down the Louisiana State University sidelines and yelling in his patented (and unprecedented) bayou accent.

The good news is that Coach O – now 64-years-old – isn’t completely off the map. He pops up from time to time in videos online of him running around shirtless (it’s true), and he occasionally sits down for a long-form interview. Recently, Coach O sat down with Pardon My Take and talked a little bit about how retirement has been for him… and more importantly, how many energy drinks he’s still consuming.

During his coaching days, it was widely reported that Coach O basically preferred to mainline Red Bull. So the Pardon My Take guys asked if an excessive amount of caffeine was necessary in his retirement. Orgeron responded by saying he might be retired, but he’s still rather busy:

“I still get up at 5 a.m., and I still have an itinerary. My wife goes, ‘You’re retired.’ I get up at 5 a.m., go to some meetings in the morning, and then I workout. It’s about 3:30 (in the afternoon) that I’m done. Those are the days I have off. Three or four days a week, I’m at football practice.”

Ed Orgeron then wasted no time confirming that the rumors are true. He’s infatuated with energy drinks, and though he doesn’t coach at the moment, his caffeine intake is nothing to sneeze at:

“I love Red Bulls. I’ve gotten down to maybe six (per day).”

For reference, the daily caffeine recommendation is around 400 mg. One can of Red Bull includes around 110 mg (average cup of coffee is 90 mg or so), so even six per day would be considered high. But that’s nothing compared to what Coach O was consuming at his height of coaching. When asked how many Red Bulls he had during his coaching days, Ed Orgeron answered:

“12 to 15 easily.”

My goodness gracious. That’s absurd… and frankly dangerous (and totally Coach O). I mean, how is he alive?

And it apparently wasn’t just the Red Bulls that he was consuming for caffeine while he was coaching. He’d still have a cup of coffee or two during the day, and Coach O had one other trick up his sleeve when he needed an extra boost out at practice. It involved packing his lip with straight coffee grounds:

“Little dip of coffee mixed in too. Little dip of coffee will help you too. Goes straight to you.”

I’m genuinely curious how much of Coach O’s body is just straight up, calcified caffeine.

It’s possible that the world hasn’t ever seen a man who has developed such a strong tolerance for caffeine. Coach O was quite literally built for those “Charged Lemonades” from Panera that were accidentally killing people a couple of years back. Those were still probably a little weak for Coach O’s liking.

Orgeron also talked about returning to coaching football in the near future during the interview. If that’s the case, it’ll be interesting to see if he works his way back up to 15 Red Bulls a day, or if he plays things safe now that he’s a bit older and sticks with the HALF DOZEN that he currently consumes per day.
