Space Laces has opened his vault again and reminded the electronic music scene that nobody else is playing the same game, let alone winning it.

Vaultage 004, the latest installment in the producer’s vault-clearing series, arrived today as both an audiovisual mix and a 32-track album from one of electronic music’s most gifted sound designers. The first mix dropped in 2018, followed by its second installation in 2019 and third in 2021. The four-year wait for this latest edition, however, was worth every agonizing second.

“This next Vaultage has been years in the making, and the most effort I’ve put into a single project,” he wrote prior to today’s release.

Highlights are aplenty and surprises are at every turn. “WORM TIME” finds Space Laces joining forces with dubstep star Eptic, though they flip the script with a slithering bass house arrangement. “KEEP IT COOL” and “FREAK MODE” also go the four-on-the-floor route, glitching and chugging with the kind of textural detail that makes you wonder if he hears frequencies the rest of us can’t access.

Elsewhere, Dillon Francis joins for “STAXX,” where distorted drums run roughshod through a vintage moombahton burner. ‘LOOKING GLASS’ stuns with a filthy, languid trap sequence, all 808s and funhouse mirror synths that could soundtrack your worst carnival nightmare.

Then there’s “GARFIELD,” a ferocious dubstep banger that reunites Space Laces with his longtime collaborator Getter. He also reunites with Marshmello for the aptly titled “BOMB,” a squelching dubstep anthem. He ultimately closes the project with its most stunning departure, “UNTOUCHABLE,” a synth-soaked house track whose title doubles as a superlative for his inimitable production.
