Tim McGraw Tackles The Tough Subject Of Aging With New Single “King Rodeo,” & Fans Are Calling It “Old School Tim”

Tim McGraw still has his fast ball.

It’s been a long time since the country music star introduced himself to the world with his self-titled debut album in 1993. Over 30 years later, McGraw is still one of the most recognizable stars of the genre, and he’s got a new album, Standing Room Only, coming out on August 25. McGraw also has a corresponding tour of the same name kicking off next March in Florida.

I’m just happy to hear and see that Tim McGraw is already working on new music (he debuted a new look a couple of days ago) and is good to go for his tour next year. Not too long ago, country music fans expressed concern when the country star shared a photo of he and Faith hill in Denmark, with him resting his arms on a cane.

Tim McGraw explained that he had back surgery before his tour in 2024. Though he did that in hopes that it would make touring easier, things went south early in the tour, and he said his knees overcompensated trying to make up for his back pains, and they also went out on him a mere three weeks into touring.

After he finished last year’s tour, he had surgery on both of his knees, and while he was recovering from those surgeries, Tim’s back went out once again, and he had no choice but to have another surgery for that as well. So for those keeping score at home… that’s two back surgeries and two knee surgeries in the past two years for McGraw.

So it only makes sense that his latest song, “King Rodeo,” gives some attention to the cruelty of aging. The first verse of the new track paints a picture that’s all too familiar to those who have wished for the march of time to slow down a bit:

“So the spotlight’s faded, you moved a little past your prime
Don’t let ’em make you jaded ’cause you can’t turn back time
Tomorrow’s like a woman you can’t understand
Lady Luck’s been good to you, so take her by the hand.”

McGraw’s new song, which was just released today, goes on to sing about aging in even more detail in the chorus.

It gives some Toby Keith “As Good As I Once Was” vibes, lyrically speaking. I don’t necessarily want to start comparing Tim with the Big Dog Daddy, but both songs allude to tapping into that younger version of yourself every now and again:

“Hey, King Rodeo
We’re all gettin’ older
Saddle’s hard
The nights grow colder

There’s still a fire
That burns inside you
Just one more
Eight-second ride in you.”

Ironically, the song truly does sound like a vintage Tim McGraw track… even though the subject of the lyrics is obviously tackling present day thoughts that the 58-year-old country music star currently faces. The music video for “King Rodeo” was fittingly shot during the Inaugural Music City Rodeo that took place earlier this year.

“‘King Rodeo’ is out now! You can stream it and watch the Official Video on YouTube!”

Always knew that Tim could always turn back the clock.

The best part about the song’s release? Country music fans are loving it so far. Tim’s social media post was flooded with positive, uplifting comments about the new song. Considering the positive response to “King Rodeo,” I’d be willing to bet that the enthusiasm carries over to McGraw’s full album release later this month:

“YEEHAWWW!! Love this song.”

“Love it! Old school Tim – makes my heart so happy.”

“This is a wonderful song.”

“Now this is the version of Tim I grew up on.”

“I love this song.”

“Classic Tim McGraw! Love it!”
