Arsenal and Fulham are close to striking a deal for winger Reiss Nelson, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Talks are ongoing over a potential return to Craven Cottage for the 25-year-old, who spent last season on loan with Fulham. The proposed deal could take the form of either a loan with an option to buy or a permanent transfer from the outset – with Arsenal preferring the latter, or at least an obligation to buy at the end of any temporary move.
Nelson hasn’t featured for the Gunners since August 2023, when he made a substitute appearance against Aston Villa. He then moved to Fulham on deadline day and appears to have done enough to convince Marco Silva to bring him back for the upcoming campaign.
While it’s encouraging to see progress in moving on a fringe player like Nelson, this is a moment where Arsenal must think strategically. Simply put, a permanent sale would be the smarter move. At 25, Nelson is no longer a youth prospect – and with no realistic pathway back into Mikel Arteta’s plans, cashing in now makes the most sense.
A permanent deal would inject valuable funds into the club’s transfer budget at a time when every pound matters. Arsenal are targeting high-profile reinforcements, and raising money from outgoings is essential to finance those incomings. A prime example is Eberechi Eze. The 27-year-old Crystal Palace star would add a dynamic, game-breaking element to Arsenal’s midfield or forward line – but he won’t come cheap. Maximising the value of squad players like Nelson is a necessary step if Arsenal are to compete financially with rivals chasing similar targets.
If Fulham want Nelson, it’s time to seal a full transfer. A loan with no obligation delays the inevitable and adds uncertainty. A significant permanent fee would benefit all parties: Fulham secure a player they already trust, Nelson gets a fresh start, and Arsenal bolster their transfer war chest.
