Report: Arsenal could make surprise sale on deadline day

Arsenal may yet spring another surprise on deadline day, with Leandro Trossard emerging as a potential departure despite penning fresh terms at the Emirates only a couple of weeks ago.

According to reports in Italy, Roma’s Sporting Director Frederic Massara has made contact with Arsenal chief Andrea Berta over a possible move for the Belgian attacker. Journalist Orazio Accomando suggests that Trossard’s name has been raised in talks, while Alex Howell of the BBC has indicated that Arsenal would be open to selling the 30-year-old if a suitable bid arrives.

Trossard has been a reliable figure since arriving from Brighton in January 2023, but the recent arrival of Eberechi Eze could reduce his opportunities for regular minutes. The Belgian, who turns 31 in December, is said to be keen to avoid being pushed down the pecking order, particularly with international football still in his sights.

Arsenal only recently announced a new deal for Trossard, though in reality it leaves him with two years remaining on his contract. That position, coupled with his age profile, means the Gunners could view a sale as a chance to cash in before his value begins to drop.

With Roma keen to strengthen their attacking options before the window closes, this could develop quickly. Whether Arsenal will ultimately part ways with Trossard remains to be seen, but his situation highlights the level of turnover expected in north London today.

Arsenal are expected to sell or loan at least five players today, in what will be a busy day for the club.

There has also been previous interest from Saudi Arabia, whose transfer window remains open until 10 September, so this will continue to be one to watch.
