Report: Arsenal ‘reignite interest’ in Serie A 20-goal winger, club asking for £45m

There’s been news trickling in today that suggests Arsenal still have work they want to do in terms of incomings this month.

The Gunners have reportedly reignited their interest in Ademola Lookman as they continue to explore experienced reinforcements for their forward line. According to The Sun, the North London club are once again monitoring the Atalanta winger, who has asked to leave the Italian side after a sensational season.

Lookman netted 20 goals across Serie A and the Champions League last term, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most productive wide attackers. Despite turning 28 in October, Arsenal are not deterred by his age. They’ve already secured a deal for Viktor Gyökeres (27) and maintain strong interest in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze, also 27.

With Hale End talents like Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman coming through the ranks, Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta appear to be focusing on signing proven, ready-made attackers to complement their youthful core. Lookman, who can operate off the left or through the middle, fits that brief perfectly.

However, a move may depend on departures. Leandro Trossard, now 30, could be the player sacrificed to make room financially and tactically for Lookman’s arrival. Though the Belgian has chipped in with important moments since his move from Brighton, Arsenal’s interest in a more explosive and consistent output from the left suggests an upgrade is being seriously considered.

Swapping Lookman for Trossard would counter a concern around Lookman’s age, given he is three years younger. Lookman also possesses better pace and one vs. one ability, something Arsenal are crying out for more of. Rodrygo remains another, younger option, but there are some reported concerns over his age.

Atalanta are said to be holding out for £45million, and while that figure may seem steep, Arsenal’s recruitment team will weigh it against the 27-year-old’s elite end-product and tactical versatility.

It does feel though, given the players desire to leave, there is potential for a deal to be done at less than that amount, though Arsenal would be competing with a number of club for his signing, including Barcelona.

If the Gunners do make a formal move, it would underline their intent to add immediate quality and depth ahead of a season with high expectations.
