You thought you hated “Miami” before, eh?
When Morgan Wallen dropped “Miami,” the 35th track on his monster 37-song I’m The Problem album, he knew that he was gonna get heat for it. He told Apple Music’s Kelleigh Bannen that he was going to get “crucified” for it, and he certainly did from a number of traditional county music fans:
“I just think he’s the pure best vocalist in country music, ever. I think that’s really all there is to it. And I love the sadness and heartbreak that was in his songs. Obviously, it seems like he was in a lot of pain, and I seem to empathize with people like that. And then you throw his vocal, and those songs, on top of it, it’s just incredible.
You said something about ‘Miami,’ I already know I’m gonna get crucified for that song, but I don’t know… it is fun, and I enjoyed it, and me and the boys writing it had a good time writing it.
In my own way, I’m not gonna do a Keith Whitley cover, probably. I don’t feel right doing that… this is my own way of paying my respect. And if that offends people, I don’t really care, but I’m gonna assume it will.”
For me personally, it was just kind of whatever… it’s not my style, but I’m certainly not going to waste my own energy getting worked up over it. Just hit the skip button, no harm, no foul. But a number of people blasted him for it, calling it disrespectful, disgraceful, “Keith is rolling in his grave,” etc… and out of all the songs on the album, it’s relatively close to the bottom in terms of streams… on Spotify at least.
But then on Theo Von’s podcast, he said they mulled over the idea of a rap feature on it, and ultimately they opted to go solo and just position it for a remix to come in the future:
“I got a song on my record called ‘Miami.’ It’s a Keith Whitley flip… that’s one of his bigger songs, I guess. But we flipped it and turned it into more of a rap style. But it’s cool, I like it.
It seemed like it could use rapper on there, but I didn’t end up using a feature, we ended up just making a second verse. But it’s one of those songs that it wouldn’t be surprising if we got a remix and did that once it’s out.”
And it sounds like that remix is already in the works.
Last night, in his first of 2 nights in Miami, Morgan walked out solo (c’mon… call up Matthew Tkachuk, tell him to bring the Cup), but he treated fans to a little teaser of what appears to be a “Miami” remix featuring Miami rapper Rick Ross, and one of the certified rap GOATs, Lil Wayne.
He then shared a recap on Instagram, featuring a preview of Wayne’s verse:
Say what you want about Morgan Wallen, I don’t care if you like his music or not, he’s become one of the biggest stars in all of music. Rappers want to work with him, pop stars want to work with him, Lana Del Rey can’t keep his name out of her mouth… the ascent has been wild. Of course, you could say the same about Zach Bryan’s meteoric rise, and Chris Stapleton has certainly gained the attention of everybody in music lining up for a collab.
But do you wanna know my favorite part about this new collab for Morgan, the part that will give me the most joy? The fact that the woke media (and liberal white women) will show up right on cue to talk about how much of a racist Morgan Wallen is when the song drops, and how “disappointed” they are in Lil Wayne and Ross for collaborating with him, completely ignoring the obvious irony there…
Meanwhile, Morgan, Wayne and Ross will be laughing all the way to the bank. The post Morgan Wallen Previews “Miami” Remix Featuring Lil Wayne & Rick Ross first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
