Keith Urban Hangs Up On Radio Show When Asked About Nicole Kidman’s Steamy Love Scenes With Other Men

Yikes…
When interviewing Keith Urban, a good rule of thumb is to keep the conversation focused on him and his music, rather than his personal life and relationships. Or at least, don’t ask how he feels about Zac Efron shoving his tongue down her throat, eh? Of course, the New Zealand-born, Aussie-raised, country star is married to actress extraordinaire, Nicole Kidman, and is known for shutting down during interviews in the past when questions become personal surrounding his wife.
Last year, when Urban appeared on the Jam Nation with Jonesy & Amanda podcast, Urban shut down when the conversation veered away from his record HIGH and upcoming world tour to talking about Nicole Kidman being at the Venice Film Festival. Urban was visibly uncomfortable, giving concise responses to the questions, eventually shutting it down as a whole with the simple phrase:
“Anyway, moving on.”
More recently, it appears that Mix 102.3’s Hayley & Max in the Morning had not done their homework prior to interviewing Urban, leading to an even more awkward interaction with the “Blue Ain’t Your Color” singer. Max Burford and co-host Hayley Pearson began the interview in high spirits with Urban, and it was clear that he was in good spirits from the start. The conversation was going well, with them talking about his upcoming Australian leg of his High and Alive tour.
Urban expressed his excitement to be back in his home country, sharing that he was especially thrilled to be performing at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on August 28 because it’s “just a good vibe in the audience.”
However, things took a turn during the “Wall of Truth” segment. During this portion of the radio show, the hosts ask personal questions, hoping their guests will answer them honestly or request that they move on. So it’s generally designed to be pretty personal. However, things got a little too personal for Urban when he was questioned about his wife.
“What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV and radio?”
Buford waited for Urban’s response, but the line grew silent. He then looked at his producer, asking what had happened, to which he was informed that Keith Urban had disconnected from the Zoom call.
“I think his team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question. He’s gone, see you Keith.”
Buford was trying to make a joke surrounding the situation, questioning:
“Does Keith Urban hate us? Do we have beef with Keith Urban now?”
However, co-host Hayley Pearson said that she felt like she had known this might happen and was upset that they had made the Grammy Award-winning artist mad. When Pearson expressed this, Buford then questioned her:
“If you knew this was going to happen, Hayley, why didn’t you stop me asking the question?”
OOF… that’s not a great on-air moment. Then again, we’re blogging about it so maybe… mission accomplished? Nevertheless, I have a feeling that Keith Urban may not be returning to this radio show anytime soon. While it’s understandable to want to ask questions about Nicole Kidman, given that they are both famous figures, I can’t say I disagree with Urban for this reaction.
If the question had been related to one of her shows or what her favorite role has been recently, I think that would have garnered a very different reaction, but asking a man about his woman kissing other men? Come on now. I’d be interested in seeing if Keith Urban makes a statement regarding his decision to disconnect from the interview or if he will stand by his reaction, letting this moment fade in due time.
If you want to hear the radio clip, you can listen to it HERE, but if you wanna hear Zac and Nicole actually talk about their steamy love scene, you can do that below:
