Thankful everybody’s alright…

We’re in the middle of bowl season, and although there aren’t any playoff games today, there’s still plenty of college football on TV.

One of the games taking place today is the Armed Forces Bowl, which takes place at Amon G. Carter Stadium, home of the TCU Horned Frogs, in Fort Worth, Texas.

This year’s game features a matchup between the Texas State Bobcats and the Rice Owls, two Texas schools playing a home state matchup.

Unfortunately, things got off to a scary start before the game even kicked off, when the skydiving team apparently had some trouble landing in the stadium.

Video of the pregame ceremonies shows one parachutist getting caught in a cable holding up the field goal netting before falling a reported 35-feet to the ground:

It doesn’t appear that he landed on anybody, as he appeared to fall to the turf just behind the field goal net and not directly into the crowd.

The parachutist that got tangled up in the wire was the second one into the stadium, after the first managed to land successfully. It wasn’t the only mishap during the pregame ceremony though, as it was reported that only 3 of the 5 parachutists were able to touch down safely in the stadium, with one landing outside the stadium.

Luckily, it sounds like everybody was ok and relatively uninjured. According to a statement from Armed Forces Bowl media director Drew Harris, the man who fell to the ground was able to walk away from the scary incident:

“We’ve been told he walked away on his own power.”

While the man’s name wasn’t immediately available, the skydivers were part of the All Veteran Group parachute team, which was founded in 2011 and is based in North Carolina. The group parachutes into over 150 events per year, including college football and NFL games, and says on their website that they’ve completed over 100,000 successful jumps since the team’s inception.

The group has also parachuted into the Armed Forces Bowl before.

Glad everybody seems to be alright, but man, what a scary way to start a game.

As far as the bowl game itself, things aren’t going very well for Rice either. It’s currently just the middle of the fourth quarter, but the Texas State Bobcats are currently up 40-7 on the Owls, who went 5-7 this season but were invited to play in a bowl game after other teams declined and left open spots to be filled.

Today is the final day of non-playoff bowl games this college football season. After the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, college football fans will be treated to a matchup between Navy and Cincinnati in the Autozone Liberty Bowl, followed by Duke and Wake Forest in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl (which has the best postgame celebration of the season featuring the winning head coach getting mayo dumped all over them), and ending the day and the bowl season with the Trust & Will Holiday Bowl between Arizona and SMU – complete with a competition allowing contestants to win money by throwing footballs into a casket.
