Homicide Reported at Burning Man After Attendee Found “Lying in a Pool of Blood”

Nevada authorities are investigating a homicide at Burning Man after a man was found dead on Saturday night, according to the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office.

The discovery occurred at approximately 9:14pm on August 30th as the festival’s signature effigy, known as “the Man,” was beginning to burn. A sheriff’s deputy was flagged down by a participant who reported seeing a man “lying in a pool of blood,” the office said in a press release issued Sunday.

Deputies from the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office and rangers with the Bureau of Land Management responded and found an adult male on the ground, already deceased. Investigators established a perimeter at the scene, joined by members of the Burning Man Project’s Black Rock Rangers, the release said.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Division was later called in to assist with evidence collection. Law enforcement officers interviewed several participants nearby, but officials said the investigation remains ongoing. A section of Black Rock City, the temporary settlement where the event takes place, will continue to have a heavy police presence until the site is cleared, authorities said.

The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed. His body was transported to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for examination.

Authorities said the homicide appears to be an isolated incident but urged Burning Man participants to remain “vigilant” and aware of their surroundings. Police did not provide any information on a possible cause of death or suspects.

Anyone with information related to the case has been asked to contact Investigator Josh Nicholson at the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office. The case number is #25-318.
