When Kevin Parker resurfaced in late-July with “End of Summer,” it felt less like a single and more like the signal flare of a new era. That’s now been answered after Tame Impala announced their fifth album, Deadbeat, due out in October.
Recorded in the first half of 2025 between Parker’s hometown and his Australian studio, Deadbeat is said to dig into stagnant cycles of old patterns, self-doubt and the struggle to move forward. The record frames the dancefloor as therapy and music as a self-prescribed cure, doubling as both an escape and an emotional release.
The album announcement coincides with the release of a new single, “Loser.” The hypnotic track, which explores an introspective phase for Parker, meditates on insecurity, self-deprecation and the universal feeling of failure through downtempo psychedelia. Parker’s lyricism at times nods to Beck’s 1994 alt-rock classic of the same: “I’m a loser, babe,” he warbles.
The official music video features Stranger Things actor and musician Joe Keery, who brings the vulnerable track to life as he navigates the immediate aftermath of a breakup. The video was directed by New Zealand-born filmmaker Sam Kristofski.
Parker is now poised to take Deadbeat on an eponymous tour of the US with eight dates in Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles and more.
