Everybody’s a hero after a little tequila, right?

While whiskey has traditionally been the drink of choice for country music, it seems like over the last few years tequila has been a popular muse (or foil, depending on how you look at it) for artists. In fact, several country artists have even started their own tequila brands, including close friends and Texas legends Jon Wolfe and Randy Rogers.

So it only makes sense that they would team up on a song about their favorite nectar.

The new Texas twanger, which drops everywhere tomorrow, is called “Tequila Cowboys,” and the lyrics tell a relatable story about feeling like you’re a cowboy ready to save the world with your friends after a few drinks:

“We all form a posse
Every Saturday night
To howl at the neon
And the buzzin’ bright lights
We’re all desperados
Old hats and young guns
Chasin’ a good time
Out on the run

Tequila Cowboys
Riding again
Raising our glasses
Toasting good friends
We’re holding’ the line
Sittin’ tall on a barstool
Tequila cowboys
Outlaws and fools”

Speaking to Whiskey Riff on the new song, Jon says he appreciates the humor in a bunch of drunks who think they’re saving the world:

“I love the humor and sentiment in this song. It’s about the camaraderie of a bunch of guys getting together from all walks of life, saddlin’ up at the bar on a Friday night. In their minds they’re Texas Rangers trying to save the world, but really they’re just the town drunks… kinda hits home!”

I mean, we’ve all been there – as Randy admits:

“Tequila Cowboys is kinda like the workin’ man’s blues. White collar or blue collar, we are all in this together.”

Jon and Randy are obviously both legends in the Texas country music scene, so naturally they’re good friends and appreciated the opportunity to team up on the new track – with Jon even calling it one of his favorite songs that he’s ever recorded:

“It’s such a luxury to live in the Texas Hill Country with so many great country singer/songwriters in the area. It was an honor to have Randy come by the house and write this song with me, my producer Dave Brainard, and co-writer Tony Ramey. I guess from the title of the song, you know what we were drinkin!

I grew up listening to great duets with legendary outlaw singers like Willie and Waylon. Hearing Randy’s voice on this song gives me that old school bar room country feeling again. It’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written and recorded.”

And it’s one that Randy was happy to be a part of:

“Super proud of this one! Thank you to Jon for looping me in. Salud amigos!”

Wonder how much tequila they drank in the studio together…

The song is exactly what you’d expect from two heavyweights in the Texas country music scene: Well-crafted, relatable lyrics and a bluesy sound that takes you straight to the honky tonk.

While the song drops everywhere tomorrow, we’re pumped to bring you the first listen to the new duet.
