Eric Church Lays Down The Law When His Kids Play ‘TikTok Music’ In The Car: “No, Trust Me”

Not on Chief’s watch.

Good luck finding a country music star with a better taste in music than Eric Church. In case you don’t know who some of his musical influences are, Church made that easy to find when he built his downtown Nashville bar on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Broadway.

If you’ve never been, the beautiful bar (that just might be my favorite artist owned bar on Broadway) features stunning stained glass windows on the establishment’s third and fourth floors. Each window is dedicated to an artist that has shaped Church’s career, including but not limited to:

-The Rolling Stones

-Prince

-George Strait

-Kris Kristofferson

-Hank Williams Jr.

-Aretha Franklin

-Jimmy Buffett

And that’s just scratching the surface. Next time you go to Nashville, make sure to take a second to scope out all 20 stained glass windows that are featured in Chief’s.

Clearly you can tell just by those artists listed above that Church has a great taste in music. Some of that derives from the power that some of Eric’s favorite artists conveyed in their songs and albums. Chief recognizes that one song, or one artist, can take you back to a singular moment.

As he gets older, Eric Church actually seeks that feeling out, and did his best to make that the theming of one of his newest songs: “Hands of Time.”

“I feel like as I get older, I’m looking for things that make me feel not as old. And for ‘Hands of Time,’ I really do, I can honestly say, that when I hear music or a movie, those things, when I see something from my past, I feel like I did then. I relate to what it was then.

There’s a line in the song, ‘How do you handle the hands of time?’ And I really believe that a really good way to handle that is with music … that’s a way that I handle it. I think it was an interesting concept, from a writing standpoint, to come in and handle it that way. I think it’s pretty good advice for people as they age to find things that make ’em feel younger. That’s what this song is about.”

Another way that Eric Church feels younger is by hanging out with his two sons, Boone and Tennessee (the two children he shares with his wife Katherine Blasingame). They keep Eric sharpened and up to date on modern music… whether he likes it or not. And just as they’ll make Church listen to certain songs in the car, Chief often lays down the law and returns the favor:

“I feel like there’s just a lot of people that feel that way, when they hear that music and crank up. I have this thing with my kids now, who are 13 and 10. We get in the car and they want to listen to the TikTok channel and all these new things.

And I’m playing the Allman Brothers, and they’re going, ‘What is this?’ I’m like, ‘No, trust me. You need to know this.’ There’s just something as you get older that makes you appreciate your foundation and kind of the bible of what made you who you are musically.”

Raising em’ right. The Allman Brothers Band beats out TikTok slop any day of the week.

It’s honestly very brave of Eric Church’s kiddos to test his musical taste with the latest hits off TikTok. They must be in a little bit of a rebellious stage, because do they really cue up songs off of social media when their own father but out an absolute banger with “Hands of Time?”
