Proof that people will complain about anything.

Yesterday, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and representatives of The Boring Company announced a new project called “The Music City Loop,” an underground tunnel that will be constructed to run from Nashville International Airport to downtown Nashville.

The project is set to begin construction later this year, and is meant to ease traffic heading into downtown by providing a quick and cost-effective route from the airport. The public transportation system will be serviced by Tesla vehicles to shuttle passengers from BNA, similar to the Vegas Loop system already currently in operation.

According to the governor’s announcement, the project will connect BNA and downtown Nashville with a transit time of just 8 minutes. And it’s going to be entirely privately funded, meaning there will be zero cost to taxpayers.

In announcing the project, Governor Lee praised the partnership as an innovative solution to existing challenges:

“Tennessee continues to lead the nation in finding innovative solutions to infrastructure challenges. By leveraging the innovation of private sector companies like The Boring Company, we’re exploring possibilities we couldn’t achieve on our own as a state. This partnership represents the kind of forward-thinking, fiscally responsible approach that will define the future of transportation in Tennessee.”

And The Boring Company President Steve Davis praised Nashville for their support of the project:

“The Boring Company is excited to bring our world class tunneling and transportation capabilities to Tennessee. We are appreciative and grateful for the continued support and collaboration from the State of Tennessee, and local Nashville community and business leaders.”

I mean, what’s not to love? Less traffic, faster commute downtown from the airport, and zero cost to taxpayers? Sounds pretty good, right?

Well of course people still found ways to be upset about it.

Immediately after the project was announced, the left-leaning Nashville Scene published an editorial blasting the “Music City Loop,” calling Elon Musk “a Nazi trying to tunnel through the Swiss-cheese rock under our city” and a “dumb evil f–ker.”

And many took to Reddit, as well as social media, to share their opposition – which mainly seems to be driven by Elon Musk’s involvement:

“Gross. Nobody wants this.”

“It’s hard to imagine Nashville selling out more than it has but here we are.”

“Nothing Elon does is much needed.”

“Anyone else concerned with the environmental contamination that they knowingly cause and don’t take responsibility for?”

“I really hope I can move out of this state before they build this a–hole a private Tesla tunnel.”

“Nobody needs an Elon Hole.”

“No one wants this and it does nothing to help the problem!”

Of course many of the same people complaining that it’s not possible to build a tunnel or that it wouldn’t solve any problems also suggested that they instead build a subway line, which seems to invalidate their own points. But hey, the internet isn’t known for its nuance.

And even Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, who has made transit a key part of his agenda during his first term, didn’t sound all that thrilled about the possibility of something that would actually make a difference and be completely free to the city:

“We are aware of the state’s conversations with the Boring Company, and we have a number of operational questions to understand the potential impacts on Metro and Nashvillians.”

Weird way of saying “thank you,” but I guess that wouldn’t appeal to his constituents.

Obviously there a ton of people who fly into Nashville every day who stay downtown, and even more who come into towns for conventions at Music City Center. If the tunnel is a success, not only would it provide an easy way for them to get to their destination after arriving at BNA, but it would also eliminate the traffic that those vehicles would otherwise cause for people commuting around the city.

I’m still not entirely sure what the problem is for people like the mayor and those complaining online, other than the fact that Elon Musk is involved.
