The math is mathing.
Morgan Wallen’s released his monster 37-song new album I’m The Problem in May, and it has dominated the charts and remained at #1 on the Hot 100 for the eight weeks since it has been out. The album debuted at the top of the all-genre Billboard 200 album chart, and landed 6 songs in the top 10 of the all-genre Hot 100 upon its release. It also claimed all 10 spots in the top 10 of the Hot Country Songs chart, the first time an artist has swept the top 10 spots. Love him or hate him, that’s a wild accomplishment.
The focus of the record is obviously on Morgan and his feelings on a lot of the mistakes he’s made in his personal life, and specifically, lots of different relationships, and he previously explained that he wanted to “dig deeper” and really flesh out all of the concepts he had for each song.
Of course, a lot of the album also focuses on Morgan’s struggles in his love life and falling short in that area in may different ways, but one of the fan-favorites, “20 Cigarettes” focuses on a specific night and how he essentially had a one night stand with a woman he met at a bar. It also cleared up how to pronounce “Demonbreun,” for all the Nashville visitors who constantly say it wrong. Just a heads up, it’s not “Dee-mon-brawn.”
The song has four co-writers in Chris LaCorte, Chase McGill, Blake Pendergrass and Josh Miller, and in a previous post, to quote myself, I said:
“I hate this song. I almost liked it, but something about the melody and cadence of the verses drove me crazy.”
It’s grown on me a little since then, I wouldn’t say I still “hate it,” but to be fair I wrote that just days after the album came out and there was just way too much to sort through. I had honestly never thought that much about the actual math behind it… clearly I’m a writer (I work with words, not numbers), so I’d rather not have to think about how it all adds up, but a TikTok user and Morgan Wallen fan did the math for us.
Believe it or not… the math DOES add up.
The viral video below counts how many cigarettes they go through during each part of the song, all the way up until there are 13 left. There was some dispute in the comments about the line that says “we burned two while she told me ’bout her hometown,” and whether that meant they both had two of their own or there was two between them in total, but it has to add up to four to make it work so I think it’s safe to assume they each had two:
