If you’re not listening to Briscoe yet, then I suggest you change that.
The genre defying, Austin, TX based duo comprised of lifelong friends Truett Heintzelman and Philip Lupton has gained some serious traction while touring in support of some of the scene’s biggest names, and with a new album on the way, they’re poised for a major breakthrough in 2025.
Between their 2020 self-titled Briscoe EP and 2023 debut record West Of It All, they’ve already compiled an exceptional catalog of originals waiting to be discovered, including their biggest hit to date in the upbeat and funky track “Hooped Earrings.” And after spending time on the road with big time Texas-bred country bands like Flatland Cavalry and Shane Smith & the Saints, as well as opening shows for superstars like Noah Kahan and Dave Matthews Band, Briscoe has gained some serious exposure over the past couple of years. But now, it seems like they’re ready to take this thing to the next level.
Slated for release on September 19th, Briscoe’s aptly titled forthcoming record Heat of July features 12 tracks, including the lead single “Roughnecks” that hit streaming platforms this past week. Inspired by a photo of Heintzelman’s great grandfather who worked in the oilfields of Oklahoma – just like those found throughout their home state of Texas – the tune is filled with powerful harmonies and easygoing, tasteful instrumentation. Following a narrator who spends his days working long hours and longing for a woman he left behind, the track showcases both their impressive vocal prowess as well as their deft lyricism steeped in the traditions of the Lone Star state.
Check out the music video for “Roughnecks” here:
Consisting of thought-provoking and nostalgia-inducing topics like love, memories, and navigating life as touring musicians and aspiring family men, the Heat of July record was written on the road and comes after both Lupton and Heintzelman married their wives in 2024, turning a new chapter in their lives following the release of West Of It All 2023. Despite their experiences on the road playing a major role in the making of this project, the album features plenty of imagery inspired by the American Southwest, and thematically pays homage to their Texan roots as they recall memories throughout their lives and reference the harsh heat of West Texas for which the album is named.
Produced by Brad Cook, the Grammy-nominated producer best known for his work with the likes of Nathaniel Rateliff & the Nightsweats and Waxahatchee, featuring legendary folk group Watchhouse, and backed by an A-list roster of studio musicians, it’s clear that Briscoe has surrounded themselves with immense talent in the making of Heat of July.
But more importantly, as country music fans will learn with the release of further singles and eventually the whole album, Briscoe is an extremely talented duo in their own right, and it’s just a matter of time until they make the next step in their careers. This album might just be the catalyst that gets them there.
