Brent Cobb is here to fill your prescription for southern rock and roll.
With a deep and eclectic catalog of music rooted in the rich history of the southern sound, Cobb’s work has run the gamut between country, blues, soul, and rock and roll throughout his admirable career as a musician. If you’ve ever seen him perform live, though, you know that he has a propensity to lean into the rock and roll side of his sound more often than not.
Nevertheless, as a songwriter known for his lyrical prowess, Cobb felt it necessary to prove that he and his band The Fixin’s aren’t just a singer-songwriter country group, and as a result, his aptly titled southern rock record Ain’t Rocked in a While is set to hit streaming platforms on July 11.
Announcing the album back in April in tandem with the release of the title track “Ain’t Rocked in a While,” Cobb expressed a desire to lean further into some of his influences that got him making music in the first place, and to hearken back to the sound of some of his earlier music in an effort to show newer fans his rock and roll side.
He and the band followed that lead single up with the hard-driving, big riff-ridden track “Even If It’s Broke” a month or so later, and now, a few weeks before the 10-track project’s official release, the Ellaville, GA native is back with another single titled “Take Yer Medicine”
What exactly “yer medicine” entails is up for interpretation, but one thing that is for sure is that Cobb has proven his point on the rock and roll front, and we’ve barely scratched the surface of the record. Heavier in the sonic sense than ever before, yet maintaining the impressive songwriting and storytelling quality that fans expect from one of the industry’s best, Ain’t Rocked in a While is shaping up to be a special project, and “Take Yer Medicine” is just the single that fans need to get excited for July 11.
Give it a listen for yourself below.
“The trip it ain’t that long, Gotta sip ’til it’s gone
Belly up and go one, take yer medicine
Six pack of the blues, getcha head out of the noose
Whatever you do, go on take yer medicine”
Cobb appears to be in the process of rolling out a masterpiece of which us fans may not totally be worthy, but hey, I’m sure not complaining. Here is the album’s full tracklist, along with the two aforementioned singles that have already been released.
