Calling for “Phillies Karen” to hand over the ball, but there’s a catch.
I’m sure that we’ve all seen the viral Philadelphia Phillies fan who managed to become public enemy #1 on the internet over the weekend after her disgusting behavior during a game at LoanDepot Park against the Miami Marlins.
After a home run from Harrison Bader, a dad ran to the end of his row hoping to get the ball for his 9-year-old son, Lincoln. But apparently, the Karen in the row behind him (who didn’t appear to have any kids with her) wanted it too, and wasn’t happy when the dad was able to snag the home run ball.
As the dad delivered the ball back to his son and the two were hugging to celebrate, the woman ran up and began yelling at him, demanding that the small child turn over the ball. And for some reason, the dad forced the kid to give it up. The dad’s facial expression made it seem as though he didn’t want to deal with a crazy Karen, but how heartbreaking it had to have been for that kid to have the baseball ripped out of his hands.
Obviously, there are many things wrong with this situation. But most importantly, the #1 rule of baseball is that if you catch a ball, it should go to a kid if there’s one around. That’s not only common sense, but it’s just being a decent person. So to chase after a guy and demand a ball (that he got fair and square) from his kid? Insane behavior.
Luckily, the Marlins caught wind of what happened and quickly made it right. They sent a staff member over to apologize and deliver some gifts to Lincoln, who was at the park celebrating his birthday. But that was just the start of the blessings headed this kid’s way after the incident. After the game, the Phillies made sure that the boy got a signed bat from Harrison Bader.
After getting the bat, the boy’s father, Drew Feltwell, said to NBC10.
“I felt like Superdad putting that ball in his glove and giving him a hug. Still in disbelief that she walked down there like that. I wish I had the ball for my son to put in his room next to the bat,” Feltwell said, “but if I had the ball, I probably wouldn’t have gotten the bat, so it worked out fine.”
The blessings kept coming the kid’s way after getting a signed bat, and the CEO of Camping World (and Bed Bath & Beyond), Marcus Lemonis, came in with his own offer to the boy: He’s sending Lincoln to the World Series, and hooking the family up with a new RV.
“I’ll send this young man and his family to the MLB World Series on me. Oh and you just won an RV as well.”
I’m sure Phillies Karen is kicking herself right about now…
But it does not end there. Now, the sports trading cards company Blowout Cards is offering a cash reward for the ball to be returned to the child, making the father’s statement come true about wanting the ball to be placed next to the bat. Blowout Cards made an official post on their website and social media pages asking for the ball in return for $5,000, but there’s a catch…
“We’ll offer $5,000 for that baseball right here, right now … but there is a catch.
We want that ball signed and inscribed by her — and only her, whoever she is — ‘I’m sorry,’ so we can simply give it back to the kid. Our offer is official and the offer is firm — here’s our tweet noting it all and making the offer public.”
I wonder if the mystery woman will come forward now or if she will still lurk in the shadows after going viral for all the wrong reasons.
The internet has been trying to identify the “Phillies Karen” since the incident. Over the weekend, several posts began popping up claiming that the woman’s name was Cheryl Richardson-Wagner, sharing screenshots from her social media and claiming that she had been fired from her job as a teacher.
But as it turns out, they got the wrong person.
Richardson-Wagner took to social media after her name began circulating to clear up the rumors, denying that she was the woman at the game – and clarifying that not only was she nowhere near Florida, but she’s also a Red Sox fan:
“OK everyone…I’m NOT the crazy Philly Mom (but I sure would love to be as thin as she is and move as fast)… and I’m a Red Sox fan.”
And she also replied to a comment to question whether she would get an apology from those dragging her name through the mud:
“Apparently I am trending on Twitter. I wonder if I will get apologies from all of these people when the real culprit is discovered?”
Additionally, the school district that she supposedly was fired from shared a statement dispelling the rumors:
I honestly feel bad for this poor woman because Cheryl Richardson-Wagner does not look very similar to Phillies Karen, and her name has been dragged through the mud with the internet deciding she was the culprit.
I hope that the real Phillies Karen steps forward and does the right thing, returning the ball to Lincoln. The post Blowout Cards Is Offering “Phillies Karen” $5,000 For Her Stolen Baseball, BUT She Has To Sign It With “I’m Sorry” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
