Don’t you hate it when you leave the house and you can’t remember if you left the black bear on the stove?
People that live in areas that are considered “bear country” are often told to “bear proof” their homes, but I doubt anyone has ever asked for their ceiling to be “bear proofed.” One homeowner in Kentucky might have wished their ceiling could have at least held the weight of a bear after one fell through through the upper portion of the home and crash-landed in the kitchen.
The Kentuckian swiftly called the authorities to alert the proper personnel that a bear was inside of their house. A game warden came to investigate and was eventually able to surmise that the sizable black bear had managed to climb into the home’s attic through an outside opening, and from there, it fell through the ceiling and into the house.
This all happened in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 21.
Put yourself in the shoes of this homeowner for a second. You are likely still asleep and hear a loud crash in the house. When you go to investigate, likely expecting to cross paths with an intruder or burglar, you see that there’s a newly installed skylight in your house, and a wild bear was the one who installed it. That’s got to be one of the most terrifying wake up calls in the history of mankind.
Fortunately, the homeowner was able to get the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement team on the case, and they quickly responded and handled the manner. As you’ll see and read in their post below, the bear was positioned on the kitchen stove when they arrived:
“On Wednesday, May 21, at around 5:00 A.M., Game Warden Derick Creech responded to a call of a black bear in a residence in Bell County. Upon arrival, the bear was located sitting on the stove in the kitchen.
With assistance from a Bell County Sheriff’s Deputy, Warden Creech was able to run the bear out through an open door. After taking a look around, it was determined that the bear had climbed up a ladder outside and squeezed through an opening into the attic. The bear then fell through the ceiling into the residence below.”
Even with all of the bizarre components of that story, you might be thinking… a black bear in Kentucky?
Sure enough, black bear sightings in the Bluegrass State are becoming more and more common – especially in the central and eastern parts of the state. Bell County, where this bear-falls-through-ceiling story occurred, is in the southeastern part of the state and borders Tennessee (not too far north of the Great Smoky Mountains).
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife even put out a PSA not too long ago telling Kentuckians that black bears are starting to creep into the state… and that wild bears should never be fed:
“Bear sightings are increasing across Kentucky. This time of year, young black bears are on the move as they search for food and new territory – meaning sightings are more frequent, even outside of their usual mountain ranges. Never feed a bear.
It can only create problems for both you and the bear, plus they don’t need it. They have everything they need in their natural environment. Feeding bears is illegal in Kentucky. Let’s all do our part to protect wildlife and keep our communities safe.”
Doesn’t look like they said anything about what to do if a bear falls through your ceiling though…The post Black Bear Discovered Laying On Kitchen Stove After Falling Through The Ceiling Of Kentucky Home first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
