Another year of Jacob Wheeler domination is in the books as the MLF Bass Pro Tour Angler of the Year has snatched the title for the 4th time in 5 years. He’s finished inside the Top 5 every since 2019. Just an insane run from J-Dub, who is perhaps on his way to being the best of all time? I mean, he’s got a long way to go, but look out KVD…
The Bass Pro Tour finished up at Saginaw Bay, up off Lake Huron in the northern part of Michigan, and while one would generally expect smallmouth to be a heavy hitter on a fishery like that, it was all about the shallow water largemouth bite for a bulk of the tournament anglers. Especially the ones who got to fish on the final day of the competition.
So that being said, let’s take a look at what the top 10 were using to cash a check:
10. James Elam
Go big or go home, right? Truth is that a drop shot will play on any fishery at any time, but sometimes you just need to beef it up a little.

9. Keith Carson
Can’t go wrong with a MaxScent stick worm…
Berkley PowerBait MaxScent The General
8. Spencer Shuffield
A swim jig was a major player for just about every angler in this tournament, and many were catching fish in only about a foot of water.
Team Ark Elite Z-Swimmer swim jig
7. Nick Hatfield
Nick saw some action with a buzzbait, but opted to make a change to try and increase his landing percentage. The move to the swim jig paid off big time.
Megabass Uoze Swimmer swim jig.
6. Bryan Thrift
Old reliable, right? Thrift worked a little deeper than most of then anglers, targeting vegetation that was off the bank, but still relatively shallow compared to the bulk of the lake.
Z-Man Evergreen Jack Hammer Chatterbait
5. Brent Ehrler
Like much of the top 1o, Brent targeted super shallow cover by flippin’ and froggin’ and swimming a jig.
4. Cole Floyd
Cole was another one who made great use of the swim jig fishing in super shallow water around pencil reeds.
Strike King Tour Grade swim jig
3. Edwin Evers
Edwin called on a lightweight buzzbait to help secure his 3rd place finish, and ran it with a twin tail grub on the back.

2. Todd Faircloth
With how shallow some of the fish were set up on Saginaw Bay, a swimming worm was a great from Todd Faircloth who challenged Jacob Wheeler for the lead throughout the championship round.
1. Jacob Wheeler
Jacob Wheeler took home an Angler of the Year title AND the Saginaw Bay win for the final stop of the year. He got off to a great start drop-shotting for smallies, but one he got some good fish in the boat, he put the ol’ frog in hand and went to work. And when it comes to frog fishing, what’s more reliable than the Dean Rojas Bronzeye frog from SPRO?
