Is it a haunted house or a world-class music venue?
From the get-go, it’s been clear that the Zac Brown Band’s “Love & Fear” Sphere shows are among the biggest things the group has ever done. But Brown hasn’t backed down from the challenge that comes with performing there (such as spending $6 to $8 million of his own money), and when the band announced their residency, they called it a “dream come true,” and the only thing they were worried about was bringing a unique experience to their fanbase:
“Bringing our new album ‘Love & Fear’ to Sphere Las Vegas is a dream come true. It’s my masterpiece so far. This show is the story of my life that I have never shared, a journey through my imagination, music, and stories that have defined who I am.
All of this brought to life in the incredible immersive environment of Sphere. It will be a unique experience where you can really feel every note, every word, right there with us. We can’t wait to share it with the fans.”
As we’ve inched closer to the Zac Brown Band’s residency at the Sphere, which kicks off on the same day that their new album of the same name releases, we’ve learned more about what they are trying to do at the now iconic venue. The sky is the limit at the Sphere, and Brown said in an interview on The Rich Eisen Show that he was trying to think of something wild to do – from a concert production standpoint – when he first found out that the Sphere was being constructed:
“The last five years I’ve been trying to figure out how to create a spectacle with production. A couple of years into that journey of figuring out what we were gonna do, we found out about the Sphere, and that they were building it. We went and looked at the building and I was like, ‘This is the place.’ It’s like a modern marvel.”
And from the moment that Zac Brown stepped into the state-of-the-art, $2.3 billion venue, he knew that it was the answer to what he had been dreaming about.
The artist went on to say that he and his band have spent 18 months just working to get their music synced up with what will be shown on the screens of the Sphere. Brown has grandiose ideas with what he can do in the “Love and Fear” realm of things, and even told Eisen that fans should expect some “jump scare” moments if they choose to attend:
“We’re also telling a story. It’ll be the first of it’s kind in that scenario. The title, Love and Fear, you can boil most of your decisions in your life based on one of those two things. I try not to base my decisions on fear, but on the love of doing something and believing that it’s a worthy cause.
The juxtaposition that we get to create in the content of being able to be there. Every one of the human emotions, we’re gonna try to pull on that string. There’s horror, jump scare moments going on to soaring, beautiful things. A rise and fall of tension and release, kind of like the storms we all go through in life.”
Jump scares at a concert? I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of that.
And Eisen, who has been to the Sphere himself, expressed some concern with the idea of having jump scares at the Sphere. He knows how powerful and convincing the optical illusions of the Las Vegas Sphere can be, and trying to utilize the technology to intentionally scare folks that are there could be… I don’t know, a little dangerous?
Regardless, Brown seems very excited with how his band’s show is coming together. At least he gave his fanbase a bit of a heads up on the jump scares? Sometimes they are easier to handle when you know that they are coming.
You can hear Zac Brown talk more about it in his interview on The Rich Eisen Show:
