Whiskey Myers acoustic?
Sign me UP.
This morning, the southern rock outfit announced an acoustic tour run, Whiskey Myers & Friends, set for December. They’re gearing up to release their seventh studio album Whomp Whack Thunder this fall on September 26th via the band’s own Wiggy Thump Records.
Tickets for the seven dates, featuring special guests Bones Owens and Rob Leines, go on sale this Friday, August 1st:
They’ve released three singles thus far in “Time Bomb,” “Tailspin,” and most recently “Midnight Woman,” which is easily my favorite so far and perfectly captures their distinctive, driving sound full of electric guitar and power that fans have come to know and love.
The album was produced by Jay Joyce (Lainey Wilson, Eric Church), and lead guitarist John Jeffers says they didn’t go into it with any preconceived ideas of what they wanted it to be, but rather let their inspirations and muses lead them:
“We didn’t set out to chase a specific sound—we set out to make a Whiskey Myers record. Jay pulled something out of us that’s raw and real, and every track’s got a piece of our story in it. This album’s about where we’ve been, what we’ve lived and the scars we earned along the way – and I think Whomp Whack Thunder might just be our most fearless album yet.”
Of course, Whiskey Myers has never been on a major label and have built their career and fan base completely independently, which extremely impressive and difficult to do in today’s modern world of music.
Frontman Cody Cannon penned all eleven tracks solo, and he is a master with the pen and has an incredible knack for bringing deep emotion and fun, outlandish stories to songs in the most unique and interesting ways, so I have no doubt he will deliver again. The full band recorded each song in studio, and once again features Cannon (vocals, guitar), Jeffers (guitar), Cody Tate (guitar), Jamey Gleaves (bass), Jeff Hogg (drums) and Tony Kent (percussion, piano) – with Joyce also contributing keys, organ and guitar.
The band has been out on the road for their extensive What We Were Born To Do Tour, and they put on a show that’s second to none… but seeing them stripped back and acoustic is just special and I love that they make it a point to do something like this at least every several years, if not more often than that.
And while we still have a little while to go until the full album is out, I’m counting down the days…
