It’s certainly been an interesting journey watching Post Malone’s rap career blossom into him becoming a full blown part of the country music community. And he’s not going anywhere anytime soon…
Producer and guitar player, Derek Wells, already confirmed that Posty will be going country with his next album, a follow up to his country debut F-1 Trillion, and we can expect even more country on this project. Digging deep into the heart of country greatness, he’ll be specifically channeling some George Jones and ’80s George Strait, who are some of his own personal influences.
“There’s also more fiddle, pedal steel, guitar solos. Where we started as two feet over the line into traditional country on ‘F-1 Trillion’ has turned into head, chest, shoulders and feet across the line on where we’re headed with the next batch of songs.”
But the truth is, Post actually got started in country music, as well as southern rock…
Post Malone’s Country Beginnings
It’s been well-documented that Post has been a country fan since he was quite young, introduced to the genre by his father while growing up in Grapevine, Texas.
In fact, Post’s father, Rich Post, did an interview a couple of years back with CBS Dallas-Fort Worth, discussing what it is like to be the father of such a huge rap star, and they even stop at the first place the rapper ever played live music, Napoli’s Italian Restaurant in downtown Grapevine. Jaime Gage, general manager of the restaurant, recalls Post playing there very well:
“He played a lot of southern rock and a lot of country, which you know you wouldn’t expect from him now, but he did a great job.”
Funny how times change… you certainly would expect that from him now. My own mother likes Post Malone and I don’t think she has any idea that he used to be a rapper.
Truth is, Post Malone was never really shy about his love for country music and way back in 2015, said he would love to collaborate with George Strait and Toby Keith. Unfortunately, he’ll no longer have the chance to team up with the Big Dog Daddy, but how electric would that be? For the King though… give him a call, George, he’s legit.
And here’s more proof that this whole country thing wasn’t just him cashing in on a trendy opportunity. The tattoos (rather the lack of tattoos) place this video somewhere around 2016, right around the release of his debut album, Stoney, but a just a casual cellphone quality performance of the Hank Williams classic, “There’s A Tear In My Beer.”
A Hank Williams Classic
Written by the iconic Hank Williams during his Nashville sessions (1950–51), the song never got released because his publisher didn’t like the alcohol reference in the song (rather ironic given the fact that Hank was quite the heavy drinker). So Williams gave the demo to Big Bill Lister, who recorded and released it in 1952.
The cool part of the story is that the demo was found over 40 years later in Lister’s attic, and they gave it to Hank’s son, the great Hank Williams Jr. He took the demo of his father’s voice, transferred it to tape, and recorded the iconic father/son duet version that we all know and love today. But it gets better… they used old video footage of Hank Sr. and some of that ’80s technology to make a music video together. It was actually quite groundbreaking at the time.
The video won Video Of The Year in both the CMA and the ACM Awards, and the performance would go on to win Grammy award in 1990 for Best Country Vocal Collaboration.
