This is a cover and a collaboration that would have Charlie Daniels grinning from ear to ear. The Marcus King Family Reunion show had many noteworthy moments from the event, but many of the viral moments didn’t even occur on stage. The weekend event featured talent like Jamey Johnson, Stephen Wilson Jr., Joshua Ray Walker, Leah Blevins, and more.
Of course, Marcus King was the headlining performance and laid down pure gold when he took the stage. From singing next to his wife Briley, and shredding with his dad on stage, to previewing a few songs from his upcoming album Darling Blue, Marcus King proved to the crowd that he’s the cream of the crop when it comes to well-rounded musicians.
The on-stage action was incredible, and it was just as good off stage. I’m sure by now many of y’all have seen the viral video of Marcus’ wife, Briley King, covering Vicki Lawrence’s ‘The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia,” which left fans begging for her to cut a cover of the tune.
It appears that bullying worked in this situation because she teased that she’s been in the studio, and it seems she might be collaborating with Ernest and Ella Langley on something, so fingers crossed that it is the cover fans are foaming at the mouth for. Regardless of what this crew is cooking up, it’s a stacked supergroup.
However, Briley King is not the only one who stole the show backstage. Another noteworthy moment includes her husband, Marcus, and Jamey Johnson warming up to a country classic: Charlie Daniels’ “Long Haired Country Boy.” The song, initially recorded in 1974, is a classic. With Daniels’ low and smooth vocals, the twangs of his voice as he sings the song about a simple country boy cannot be beat.
“People say I’m no good and crazy as a loon
‘Cause I get stoned in the morning And get drunk in the afternoon Kinda like my old blue tick hound I like to lay around in the shade And I ain’t got no money but I damn sure got it madeThere have been many stellar covers of the song done over the years, like Cody Johnson’s version, but Marcus King and Jamey Johnson’s might be one of my new favorites. The South Carolina and Alabama natives sure know what it means to be a “Long Haired Country Boy,” both in the literal and figurative sense. Both Johnson and King sport long hair styles, but the two are homegrown boys who love the land they came from, enjoying the slow and steady way of southern living.
The two men sit backstage, both picking their guitars casually, laying down a cover of the song that truly embodies the lyrics of the tune. The addition of the slide guitar makes this rendition country to the core. The unplugged and uncut version of the song highlights the natural talent of Johnson and King, and I need more of it ASAP. A studio cut of this song would rip.
If we can get Briley King in the studio, what are the odds that we can make this one happen, too?
