As country music continues to expand, evolve and subdivide, it’s becoming increasingly harder to pin down where exactly some of today’s biggest stars truly stand in the genre as a whole. While, of course, you have all of your award show and radio darlings such as Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, Morgan Wallen and more, as we all know, the independent and alt. country scene has been continuing its push into the mainstream over the past five years.

Though the indie/alt. country push has paid dividends at live shows, online and on streaming, thanks in part to dedicated fanbases like Tyler Childers, Turnpike Troubadours, Billy Strings, Sturgill Simpson and most notably Zach Bryan’s, taking a look at the state of country radio still does not reflect the healthy state that the genre is currently in.

If you recall, Turnpike Troubadours turned heads back on July 28th when they officially announced that “Heaven Passing Through” would be sent to country radio on August 18th, marking their second-ever song sent to the format, with “Chipping Mill” being sent back in August 2023. Though it eventually wound up being the second-most-added song impacting country radio that week (36 stations total), it has failed to remain in Mediabase’s concurrent Top 50 as of today.

Similarly, Tyler Childers is also trying his hand at mainstream country radio again this week. Though “Nose On The Grindstone” was originally sent to radio a month after its release on July 14th, it has once again been added to more stations across the country.

As reported by U.S. Radio Updater on X, “Nose On The Grindstone” was the third-most-added song on country radio this week, with 16 stations adding it into the rotation, falling just six adds behind Jason Aldean’s brand-new single, “How Far Does a Goodbye Go” (22) and 59 behind Thomas Rhett and Jordan Davis’ pop-country collaboration, “Ain’t A Bad Life” (75).

Even more interesting, however, is Childers’ presence on US Triple A radio this week.

In case you’re not familiar with what Triple A radio is, it stands for “Adult Album Alternative” and serves as a bit of a catch-all for artists not operating in the classic constraints of their respective genres such as country, rap, pop, rock and more. As the title states, Triple A radio also focuses on both deep cuts from albums as well as songs pushed by labels as singles. Notably, the format has been crucial for the rise of rock and pop acts such as Dave Matthews, The Black Keys and Lorde.

This week, it’s none other than Childers’ viral hit, “Bitin’ List,” taking the top spot on Triple A radio with 12 additions across the country, beating out the likes of alt. rock staples Gorillaz, The Beths and Wolf Alice.

Taking a look at Mediabase’s rolling chart on Triple A radio this week, “Nose On The Grindstone” is sitting at #34 despite not being present on its country radio chart. Additionally, Kashus Culpepper, Molly Tuttle, Charley Crockett and Amanda Shires are all present inside the Triple A Top 50.

While Triple A radio is far from what can be considered a country-centric format, especially considering its eclectic chart which currently features everyone from CAAMP and Mt. Joy to Florence + the Machine and Bon Iver, it serves as an interesting tidbit and further confirmation of the fact that any form of alternative programming in today’s country music landscape will eclipse the current shell of country radio from a pure talent perspective.

If country radio stations refuse to play the likes of Turnpike, Childers and more, Triple A radio very well might become the newest outlet for these stars to be discovered by a wider audience in the future. For now, only time and chart performance will tell.
