Over the last few weeks, Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap has found itself in the crossfire of angry right-wingers and Zionists who take umbrage with their pro-Palestine message. That political ire and their unwillingness to stand down’s captured a lot of peoples’ attention, including Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who apparently finds more in common with them than most.
Having forged his career in the fires of a hotly political band like Rage, Morello knows what it’s like to incite the right’s fury. So it only makes sense that he’d see a little bit of himself and his former bandmates in an act like Kneecap. In a recent interview with The Strombo Show, Morello said as much.
“[They’re at] at the top of the list, at the top of the list. I mean, they’re clearly the Rage Against The Machine of now, like there’s them, and there’s a gap to the next one.”
Other acts he pointed to as young acts he’s really digging lately were The Neighborhood Kids, a hip-hop duo from the San Diego area with “lived rap experience” and the U.K.’s own Nova Twins.
When Kneecap’s recent live performances where they espouse the need for a free and sovereign Palestinian state and denounce the ongoing genocide perpetrated by Israel and its IDF were brought up in the interview, Morello stood up for the trio.
“What they’re doing in their art is what people could probably stand to do more in their lives: to really speak truth to power. And, you know, Kneecap are not terrorists. What is terroristic is, you know, 20,000 dead Palestinian children. That’s the story. Not, I mean, some Irish rappers who don’t like that that’s happening. [That] should not be the story.”
