Not much sympathy on social media these days…

First off, happy Thanksgiving. I hope you’re getting to spend the day eating good food, watching football, and spending time with your crazy family.

Of course there are some people who aren’t able to spend time with their families on Thanksgiving because of the sacrifices they make… and of course I’m talking about sportscasters.

Poor Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt will be in Detroit for Thanksgiving this year, calling the game as the Detroit Lions take on the Green Bay Packers. And on the sidelines for the game will be longtime sportscaster Erin Andrews, who recently commented on the sacrifices that those who go into sports media have to make for their careers.

During an episode of her podcast, Calm Down with Erin and Charissa with fellow sportscaster Charissa Thompson, Andrews said:

“You got to love what you do because, I miss all holidays. I didn’t get married until I was in my 40s. Not that that is going to be your route, but I live out of a suitcase. I miss a lot of stuff. I missed a lot of weddings. I miss a lot of events. You have to love it to get you through the fact, I’m not gonna be home for Thanksgiving next week or Christmas is cut short.”

Now, Andrews wasn’t exactly complaining. She knows she’s got a pretty great thing going with her career, so nobody’s really going to have any sympathy for somebody making millions of dollars a year to call football games. But her comments still didn’t sit well with quite a few people on social media:

Even one of her fellow sportscasters, Jenna Laine, seemed to take issue with her comments, responding that they’re lucky to get to do what they do and sharing some perspective on others who have to spend the holidays away from their families:

“Saw Erin Andrews’ remarks about the challenges in this business…starting out making $40K a year and not having holidays. I appreciate what she’s trying to say, but let’s consider the folks working 2-3 jobs in retail, in warehouses and in the service industry right now, just trying to make ends meet. They’re not getting time with their families either. This would be a dream for them.

Some people have lost jobs and are living out of their cars as we speak, or they don’t know how they’re going to keep the lights on or put food on the table. Their kids won’t get anything for Christmas. I mean, we actually get FED on the job. I appreciate her hustle and that of my peers. But let’s have some perspective.”

Overall I don’t really think Andrews’ comments were that big of a deal. She was pointing out the realities of the job after being asked a question about advice for others wanting to go into the field. But at a time when a lot of people are struggling, she definitely didn’t get much sympathy on social media. The post The Internet Had Zero Sympathy For Erin Andrews After She Said Sportscasters Aren’t Able To Be Home For Thanksgiving first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
