Sometimes all you can do is put pen to paper to express your emotions surrounding a painful situation.

Yesterday, September 10th, conservative activist and media personality, Charlie Kirk, passed away at the age of 31 after being shot during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. Kirk, whose full name was Charles James Kirk, was known for being a founder of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organization that advocates for conservative politics on high school, college, and university campuses. Kirk would often host speaking engagements on college campuses where students could come and talk about various political and spiritual topics issues with Charlie. He was a devoted father and husband, a Christian and a patriot.

President Donald Trump confirmed his death in a post on Truth Social:

The senseless act is truly gut-wrenching, especially when Kirk’s mission was to have a conversation among those with differing opinions. He famously shared that the entire goal of these conversations was to AVOID violence. He argued that as long as we’re still talking, still debating, still standing face to face with people who disagree with us, we won’t lose our sense of humanity:

“When people stop talking, that’s when you get violence. That’s when civil war happens. Because you start to think the other side is so evil, and they lose their humanity.”

This act was senseless political violence that should be condemned by everybody in America, regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on. A wife is without her husband, and two kids are now going to grow up without a father because a maniac disagreed with his opinions on life and politics.

And while many in our nation are working through their emotions surrounding the events of yesterday, some are turning to the powerful tool of music to aid in their process, leading to a powerful song penned by an aspiring country-soul singer from Texas.

Mitchell Ferguson shared a ballad that he wrote shortly after the assassination of Kirk, sharing that this song is aiding him in processing his feelings around the horrific event.

“I don’t know how to process all the violence in America other than to write a song. This one fell out of me today.”

Ferguson flashes on the screen as he begins to strum his guitar. The words that he penned carry so much weight, and it’s a beautiful expression of true agony and heartbreak.

“A man is gone
Cause he spoke his mind
It’s all so wrong
That someone out there thinks it’s right
The coward fled
The nation bled
Yet another time

What do you say to the kid that lost their dad
Cause something that he said made someone mad
No wonder why people scared their voice
What do you say to the mother that’s all alone
In a house that used to feel like a home
Cause someone made a sick and evil choice
What do we do?
Red, white, and blue”

The weight of Ferguson’s words was incredibly moving to many who watched this song. I know I was, and it nearly brought me to tears. Music is beyond powerful. It can make us happy, sad, provoke thought, and help us heal.

Ferguson’s words are helping us process the horrific events of yesterday and those that have occurred over the last few weeks in this nation, with the shooting at Evergreen High School and the murder of Iryna Zarutska. Personally, hearing this song on the 24th anniversary of 9/11 is making the words of this ballad hit even harder… it’s a sad world we live in.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Charlie Kirk’s family and friends and those affected by the shooting at Evergreen High School. The post Texas Country Singer, Mitchell Ferguson, Pens Tragically Beautiful Ballad Following The Death Of Charlie Kirk first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
