Now THIS is a juicy story.

If you’ve been online at all over the last couple weeks and are a sports fan in any capacity, you’ve probably seen clips and articles from the recently released Prime Video series Earnhardt, which focuses on the life and legacy of the late, great NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt. Featuring interviews from Dale’s friends, family, and obviously his son, Dale Jr., the documentary also features never-before-seen footage of Dale during his racing career from both his personal and professional life.

It’s an incredibly interesting, and nuanced, look at Dale Earnhardt the race car driver, the man, the friend and the father, and Dale Earnhardt Jr.  and his sister Kelley played a huge part in the production of the series, in addition to being heavily featured in it, telling stories about their dad and memories that were both good and bad.

There’s a ton of details about his life with his widow, Teresa Earnhardt, who is not exactly a well-liked character in the world of NASCAR to put it nicely… she infamously kept Dale Jr. from being part of Dale Earnhardt Inc. after Dale Sr’s tragic death at Daytona in 2001, and that’s just scratching the surface on some of the issues she’s had with others in the family, mostly between her and her step children.

It’s honestly really sad for Earnhardt kids that they have been put in this position in terms of all the public battles they’ve had with their stepmom, and while they do have a half sister named Taylor, who Teresa had with Dale, it’s unclear what their relationship is like because they never really speak about her publicly. But a story Dale Jr. brought up on his Dale Jr. Download podcast several years ago now might shed some light on issues with Teresa that go way, way back, even between Teresa and Dale’s ex-wife, the mother of Dale Jr. and Kelley, Brenda, who passed in 2019.

During this episode, Martha Earnhardt, the late mother of Dale Sr. who passed in December of 2021, was the guest, and Jr. asked his grandma if she had details on a story he’d heard about years ago when his mom and Teresa got into a physical altercation… which led to Brenda popping Teresa for an undisclosed reason.

Dale and Brenda were meeting at Martha’s to switch the kids over, and let’s just say, it did NOT go well:

“I guess Mom and you were at your house, and y’all were on the front porch, and Dad drove up with Teresa. They had a little… they had a little battle Royale, they had a little wrestling match on the front porch. Kathy says somebody got smacked, who got smacked? Teresa got smacked! I’d heard that story, but I ain’t never… I heard rumors and little bits and pieces.”

Former co-host Mike Davis joked about who was doing the smacking, and Jr. responded:

“In the kitchen, alright, so they got inside the house. Oh my Lord. Mama snapped.”

Snapped she did… but I have to imagine there was a good reason for it, and I’d venture to guess it might’ve had something to do with her kids? Dale Jr.’s aunt Kathy was also there during the podcast recording, and said it all went downhill when Dale thought it was a good idea to bring Teresa:

“He brought Teresa there, and it became a cat fight.”

I’m sure to a man, it would be no big deal, but clearly this was a pretty complicated situation. When pressed on whether Martha remembered any of the story, she joked that she must be “trying to forget it all” because she had no recollection of the altercation:

“I really don’t remember all that… or maybe I’m just trying to forget it all.”

That got a good laugh from everyone in the room, and Jr. explained that his dad didn’t think it was a big deal for his ex-wife and current girlfriend (I’m not sure if they were married yet) to interact like this:

“Kathy’s version of events is that mom brought the kids to the house to do a switch with dad, and dad brought Teresa thinking ‘Hey man, that’s no big deal.’ Brenda wasn’t happy, and there was a physical altercation.”

For most people, it probably wouldn’t have a big deal, and it certainly shouldn’t have been, but I can’t say I’m surprised considering who all was involved… Martha asked:

“I hope Brenda won, didn’t she?”

After it was confirmed that Brenda did pull off the win, Martha came with a zinger at the end of the story, saying:

“That’s what I figured.”

Mawmaw Martha is a savage, first of all, and I love her. But she’s also an impressive woman, equally as funny as she is kind and caring, and considering she raised an icon, I know she had to have been one herself. She reminds me a lot of my own grandma by the way she talks and her cutting little jokes, so I think that’s partially why I’m so endeared to her watching this interview again,

Dale Jr. said he never realized the fight went into the kitchen from the porch, and it probably sounds a lot more redneck than it was (okay, for Kannapolis, maybe not, but I can say that), and it’s one of the best stories I’ve ever heard from the family members, I think:

“I’d heard about that long time ago, but I wasn’t sure if it was… I didn’t know. I guess I had it wrong. I thought they went and [started] wrestling and pulling hair on the front porch.”

I mean, it’s just wild, and Mike had the same reaction to hearing it for the first time that I did… he couldn’t believe it. Who knows what was said between these two women (I can only imagine), but considering who was involved, I’m obviously team Brenda. She remained beloved by the family even after she split with Dale, and Jr. and Kelley alway speak very fondly about their mom and how much they loved her.

You can watch the Earnhardt’s discuss it below, it’s hilarious:

If you’re interested in more on the Earnhardt’s, Dale’s legacy, and details on their personal lives in his heyday, you definitely need to check out the four-part Earnhardt series on Prime video.
