The ultimate wedding song.

Of course, Shania Twain scored a huge hit with her song “You’re Still the One” in 1997, which was included on her studio album Come On Over and written alongside her then-husband and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. The lyrics were inspired by criticism of of their relationship in the media, though they did ultimately divorce in 2010.

Still, the piano-driven ballad became a hit and shot to #1 on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart, and is a wedding staple in terms of couples using it for their first dance. Regardless of how the relationship ultimately ended, it’s still a beautiful song that remains a fan-favorite to this day, even if it does feel a little bit more like a fantasy than a reality for many people.

The song was inspired by Twain’s relationship with her then-husband and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who was an instrumental part in her early career, and they wrote it together, so obviously when they were a couple, it held a very special meaning to both of them. So when they went through the divorce in 2010, which was caused by Lange’s affair with Shania’s friend and assistant Marie-Anne Thiébaud, it took on an entirely different meaning, obviously.

In an interview with Etalk recently, Shania admitted that she’s had “quite a few stages with that song,” understandably not wanting to sing it for a while in the wake of the ending of her marriage. She says now, though, it’s one of her favorites to perform live because of how much it means to so many people.

I’m sure we’ve all been to at least one wedding where this was the first dance song, and it’s one of her signatures, so it’s good that she’s been able to find a different meaning in it herself, because I don’t think anyone would want to have to sing a love ballad they wrote with and about their ex-husband who cheated on them… though now that I think about it, that could be a heck of an idea for a country song too.

She explained that the meaning that makes it so special for everyone else means the most to her now:

“Well, I’m not just saying this because it seems obvious, but ‘You’re Still The One’ really is one of my favorites to do live. I’ve gone through quite a few stages with that song of, not really even wanting to sing it live for a while, just thinking, well, okay, I’m divorced now, does it really mean what it used to mean when I wrote it?

I have a newfound appreciation for it again, and I have for a while. It’s mostly fans, fans love it, they want to hear it. It means so much to them in so many ways. They’re either getting married to it, or have been married to it, or had an anniversary, or a friendship, or whatever it is.

It’s more the meaning that it is, or that it represents, to everybody else that makes it so meaningful to me again.”

It’s truly an all-time classic, and it’s a good thing she’s able to look at it so differently now, because there’s no way she can ever stop performing it…

@etalkctv Shania Twain says her fans gave her a ‘new found appreciation’ for her hit ‘You’re Still The One.’ The singer says she didn’t always feel connected to the song, especially after her divorce, but her fans’ continued love for ‘You’re Still The One,’ is the reason she was able to recapture her passion for it.✨ Catch our full convo with Shania on YT! #ShaniaTwain #StillTheOne #Country #Interview ♬ original sound – etalk
