Not a good look for Team U.S.A..

One of the best events in all of sports (not just golf) is quickly approaching: The Ryder Cup. If you’ve never heard of it, you are missing out big time. The contest pits the best golfers from the United States against Europe’s top-tier golfers in a three-day, match-play extravaganza.

The bi-annual event – which tees off on September 26 and runs through September 28 – is one of the only times that golf’s match play format takes the grandest stage, and obviously when you pit two countries against one another (especially U.S.A. and Europe), there’s going to be a lot of emotion and national pride involved. It’s truly one of the great weekends in all of sports.

That’s why this merchandise blunder is so abysmal.

When you’re hosting an event that give two teams that hate each other, and would do anything to beat the other, the platform to settle those feelings… there’s only one thing that Team U.S.A. can’t do. What’s that? Take a member of the opposing team and put their silhouette all over your U.S.A. merchandise.

I know that probably sounds like it wouldn’t happen in a million years, and to be frank, you’d hope that it wouldn’t. However, the officially licensed Ryder Cup shop for the United States of America team has chosen to roll out a shirt that certainly seems to feature Rory McIlroy: Team Europe’s best player.

That’s like if a Boston Celtics fan wore a Michael Jordan t-shirt to the game back in the day.

Now to be clear, some are saying the golfer image that Ralph Lauren used on the shirt is generic, and that it could be any golfer. But for those readers that know ball (golf ball, to be specific), it’s Rory McIlroy’s patented swing follow-through, as clear as day. This post below showcases that:

That’s unbelievable.

As an American, and a proud and longtime supporter of Team U.S.A. at the Ryder Cup, I’m comfortable saying that’s a travesty. If you have to ask yourself, “Is that Rory McIlroy’s silhouette on the U.S.A. shirt?” then it’s probably too close and that shouldn’t have ever been printed on a shirt… that’s somehow still for sale (for $65) on the Ryder Cup Team Shop.

And unless my eyes are deceiving me, that’s Rory.

In case you need additional proof, even Rory thinks it’s look like Rory. He was asked if he had seen the Team U.S.A. shirts that seemingly featured him, and the professional golfer who has had quite the year got a good chuckle out of it… and agreed that it beared a resemblance:

“I saw this, yeah… it looks more like Adam Scott to me than me, I think. But, it looks a little similar. I don’t know.”

The reporter’s follow up question went a little something like, “How do you feel about American fans walking around at the Ryder Cup rooting against you while they wear a shirt with you on it?” Again, McIlroy had a laugh and said that wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world:

“That’s okay. That’s fine. I don’t mind that.”

If Rory was smart (and funny), he’d wear it himself.

But hey, Team U.S.A. Ryder Cup shop… maybe… TAKE THE SHIRT DOWN. Go back to the drawing board, put out some better merchandise (that’s cheaper, might I add), and fire the person that designed the Team U.S.A. shirt that featured one of Team Europe’s best players on it.The post Rory McIlroy Says The Team USA Ryder Cup Shirt Looks Similar To Him: “Looks More Like Adam Scott Than Me” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
