The country music community is doing its part to support those affected by the devastating flash floods in the Texas Hill Country.
On the 4th of July, in the early hours of the morning, a natural disaster struck as the Guadalupe River rose over a foot every five minutes, increasing its total height by more than 20 feet in 45 minutes. The flash flood swept through an area filled with summer camps and small towns about 70 miles west of San Antonio.
One of those camps that was severely impacted was the Christian girls’ camp, Camp Mystic. Cabins on the grounds were swept up in the flood, a number of young girls were tragically killed in the floodwaters, as well as Dick Eastland, longtime owner and director of Camp Mystic, who gave his life to try and save campers.
As of this morning, there are nearly 60 confirmed deaths in Kerr County alone, with more in various other counties across the state. Officials said 11 children are still missing from Camp Mystic.
The community is filled with heavy hearts, and now the country music world is showing its support during this heartbreaking time. Folks like Koe Wetzel, Kacey Musgraves, Randy Rogers Band, and more have shown their support on social media.
Additionally, another Texas legend is going above and beyond. Robert Earl Keen. Keen was born and raised in Houston, Texas, but currently lives in Kerrville. The famed singer and songwriter has a deep love for the Hill Country and family ties to Camp Mystic as well.
Keen took to social media and shared the following:
“As most of you know, the Texas Hill Country and, namely, my hometown of Kerrville, Texas has been crippled by unprecedented flooding on the 4th of July.
This has resulted in devastation across the area, and there are still many missing from the event, including campers from Camp Mystic, which holds a special place in mine and my family’s hearts, as both of my daughters attended camp there. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected, and special thanks for the amazing support of the first responders from the community and all over Texas, rushing to aid those in need.
I will be working on a benefit to support the community, and more details to follow as soon as we know them. In the meantime, please support those in need via the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. That’s the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country.”
Keen then tells viewers that he will share a direct link in his post for his followers and fans to make a donation. He, too, is donating to the fund.
“I will be donating 100% of the merchandise sales from our current tour to the community foundation as well. My sincere prayers and condolences to all those involved in this tragedy. And please stay tuned as I work in partnership with the community to continue to support those in need.”
I am confident that Keen will put together a tremendous benefit that not only generates revenue for relief efforts but also brings the community together during this tragic time—stay tuned for more details.
Our hearts go out to those who have lost loved ones from the flooding, and we’ll continue to keep the Texas Hill Country in our thoughts and prayers.
