Awards mean a little more when they’re presented by your son.

A lot of people don’t even realize that Thomas Rhett is the son of ’90s country star and songwriter Rhett Akins. (In fact, his full name is Thomas Rhett Akins Jr).

Akins had some success as an artist back in the ’90s with hits like “That Ain’t My Truck,” “Don’t Get Me Started,” “She Said Yes” and “I Brake For Brunettes.” But much of his recent success has come as a songwriter.

There’s no doubt you’ve heard many of the countless hits written by Akins over the years, songs like “Boys ‘Round Here” by Blake Shelton, “When She Says Baby” by Jason Aldean, “Bait A Hook” by Justin Moore, “I Don’t Want This Night To End” by Luke Bryan, “To Be Loved By You” by Parker McCollum, or “Dirt On My Boots” by Jon Pardi, along with many, many others. He’s even written a few hits for his own son, including his first #1 hit “It Goes Like This,” “What’s Your Country Song,” “Look What God Gave Her,” and “Get Me Some Of That.”

And while his recent work has largely been what you would consider “bro country” or “pop country,” there’s no denying that he’s one of the most prolific hitmakers in Nashville.

Well last night, the National Music Publishers Association held their annual meeting, where they honored Rhett Akins (I feel like I have to keep saying their full names because it gets confusing with his son if I just say “Rhett”) with their Non-Performing Songwriter Icon Award. And before he was given the award, Thomas Rhett paid tribute to his dad with a medley of songs including “That Ain’t My Truck” and “What’s Your Favorite Country Song” – a song that the father and son wrote together.

And when it came time to accept the award, Rhett Akins could barely contain his emotions, fighting back tears as he took the podium:

“I have not cried in 20 years I don’t think. I don’t know how something like I just saw can happen…

Only God could do this… Thomas Rhett, thank you for doing that. I never would have dreamed all the years we sat in the kitchen playing guitars and writing little dumb songs turned out to be this.”

Also honored during the ceremony yesterday was Kacey Musgraves, who was presented with Songwriting Icon Award. And during her acceptance speech, Kacey spoke about the importance of songwriting:

“If there is one thing that has been a common thread through every divisive and tumultuous time throughout civilization it’s songs. It’s songs of hope, survival, love, songs of faith, songs of grief, resistance, songs of cultural identity passed down through every generation.

And it’s truly up to us, the artists, the singers, the social commentators, the poets, to weather these storms and pass down new melodies for us all to cling to together. And it’s such an honor to carry that responsibility, so may we all continue to sing no matter how dark it might get.”
