“A red head, a blonde, and a… dirty blonde walk into a studio.”

Last month, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert and Lainey Wilson teamed up for a new single “Trailblazer,” a day after debuting the song at the ACM Awards. And recently, the powerhouse trio dropped a new video taking fans behind the scenes of the writing and recording process that went into creating the new song.

Released back in early May, “Trailblazer” was a captivating collaboration that celebrated the path that past country artists had paved for new artists. As Lainey Wilson says:

“To me, being a trailblazer kind of means tipping your hat to the women of the past, but also helping somebody over that wall. I think that’s something that we will have to continue doing for the rest of forever.”

As the chorus goes:

“Livin’ on a prayer and a rhyme,
You put a flag in the ground to a country sound
To the rhythm of your own highway.
Talk about a trailblazer,
I’m rolling down the road you paved”

The song is an ode to several prominent female artists in the industry, mentioning them by name in the second verse. Among these names are Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Tammy Wynette— all artists that changed the game and paved a way for women in the county music genre.

“They taught me how to write,
how to hold on tight
In this rhinestone rodeo.
It was Dolly and Loretta
Patsy and Tammy, too
They gave me a seat at the table
So I’m saving one for you”

In the video, Reba, Miranda, and Lainey sit down in the studio to reflect on their songwriting process, discussing why the song was important for them to write. Lainey and Miranda worked on the song with Brandy Clark while Reba was in Los Angeles filming her TV show. And they talk about how they always knew they wanted to do a song together, and how being influenced by one another—as well as by the female country artists that came before them—is what inspired them to write it.

“Thank God for the women before us, because I was always watching and studying Barbara Mandrell, Dolly, Loretta, Tammy—they all stuck together and helped each other out.

That’s what it’s about. High fiving each other and running to the finish line together.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

The video also shows some behind the scenes studio time, allowing us to have a look into what recording was like. The women speak on how magical of an experience recording was and how once the chorus was finished, they knew they had something special.

Reba says:

“Getting to sing with you guys, and y’all singing the harmony parts, it’s just… angels singing. It just makes my heart so happy.”

The harmonies on that chorus are so beautiful, no wonder it made them emotional. The three country stars sure do have some incredible chemistry, both in the studio and on the stage.

Check out their live performance of the song during the 60th annual Academy of Country Music Awards ceremony.

Their musical vision for this song shines through with every stylistic choice made during their writing and recording process. I hope to see more collaborations from them in the future. The post Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, And Lainey Wilson Go Behind The Scenes On How Their New Single “Trailblazer” Was Made first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
