New York Mets Mascot, “Mr. Met,” Took A Nasty Tumble Off The Stage During Lumineers’ Citi Field Concert

Typically I’m a big fan when mascots are outside of their element. There’s just something about seeing a felt-padded, big-headed mascot getting involved in things outside of their regular job and setting. If mascots were smart, they’d stick with what they know and just do sports. But more often than not, these mascots – both at the professional and college level – find themselves expanding their territory and get out of their comfort zones.
And they typically pay the price for doing so.
The latest example of that is the New York Mascot absolutely making a fool of himself up on stage. Mr. Met joined the folk rock band known as the Lumineers during a portion of their show, and in Mr. Met’s defense, they were playing at Citi Field. That’s the home of the New York Mets for those not as familiar with the game of baseball.
I only mention that because I just went on a tangent saying that mascots shouldn’t get outside of their well-traversed turfs. Technically, this was a home game for Mr. Met, and that somehow still didn’t play into his favor. The stage that was set up on the baseball field was evidently too much of a change for the mascot, and it made for quite the hilarious spectacle.
Hilarious for us non-mascots to watch… an absolute nightmare scenarios for other mascots to take in. The Lumineers were in the middle of playing their 2016 hit “Ophelia” when Mr. Met joined the proceedings. Fittingly, Mr. Met had traded out his typical baseball uniform for some folky get-up, which was a nice touch.
But if you are going to dress the part, you’ve got to act the part (in my personal, humble opinion). Mr. Met was thrown a tambourine, and he absolutely fumbled it. The mascot quickly recovered it, and started playing the instrument with the beat of the song, and all seemed well.
That was until Mr. Met got a little too big of a head (pun intended) and tried to really showcase his stage presence. All I’ll say is that if you are attempting to work the stage, you better know the stage like the back of your hand. If you don’t, then something like this will happen.
“Rough night for Mr. Met at the Lumineers concert.”
Rough night indeed.
The tambourine drop right into the fall off the stage? That’s brutal work from Mr. Met. Fortunately, it looks like the Mets mascot popped right back up… though I know that fall had to hurt. That quick pop-up (baseball joke) was fueled purely by adrenaline. There’s no doubt that Mr. Met was feeling that one this morning.
And I know that was a horrible, no-good, very bad sequence of events… but the real tragedy might be what comes after. Mets fans online (a very superstitious group) are now already worried about a potential curse on the team that will stem from this Mr. Met fall. So keep an eye on the New York Metropolitans from here on out.
If the curse is real, they’ll fall down the standings just as quickly as Mr. Met fell off the stage. The post New York Mets Mascot, “Mr. Met,” Took A Nasty Tumble Off The Stage During Lumineers’ Citi Field Concert first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
