Here we go again…
Just a couple of weeks ago, work was suspended on the new Nissan Stadium, future home of the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, after a noose was reportedly discovered on the property.
According to WKRN, the Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed that they were investigating the incident to determine whether a hate crime was committed, and the Tennessee Builders Alliance, which is overseeing the project, announced that they had stopped all work on the new stadium while workers underwent additional training:
“This week, a racist and hateful symbol was discovered on our site. There is no place for hate or racism in our workplace. We reported the incident to law enforcement, suspended work, and launched an investigation. A reward has been offered for information leading to the identification of the individual responsible.
Counseling services are available to all workers. We are requiring additional anti-bias training for every person on site, and work will resume only after a site-wide standdown focused on inclusion and respect.
We are outraged and deeply saddened by this act. We are working in close partnership with our client, trade partners, and unions to ensure every worker understands that racism and hate have no place here. Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and treated with respect and dignity.”
Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also issued a statement on the incident:
“Obviously, this is an environment where we want to try as hard as we can to prevent scenarios that might be fear or hate-based. We’ve taken some steps, both with local policies, state policy, and partnership with them to try, again, to keep temperatures low and prevent hate incidents like this. It is very concerning, there is an open investigation. I know the Titans are cooperating with Metro Nashville Police and we’ll see what that investigation turns up.”
Through the investigation, detectives were able to identify a suspect, who had been terminated the previous week for an unrelated incident. But the suspect denied any involvement, and because there were no eyewitnesses or camera footage, investigators announced that no charges were expected to be filed over the incident.
But now, a new investigation is underway after racist graffiti was reportedly found on the site.
The Tennessee Builders Alliance announced in a statement that the discovery was made at the new stadium on Thursday morning:
“This morning, racist graffiti was discovered on the jobsite. We condemn this act unequivocally. It is a direct violation of the values we uphold and the inclusive, respectful work environment we are committed to maintaining.
The affected area was secured, and an investigation is underway. We have narrowed the timeframe in which the incident occurred and are actively working to identify the individual responsible.
Acts like this are unacceptable on a project site, our community, and society. What sets this project apart is our commitment to acknowledging and confronting them. We report what we see, investigate thoroughly, support those affected, and take decisive action to uphold our standards.
We continually reinforce the message that hate has no place in our workplace. We encourage respectful behavior, monitor for compliance, and lead with accountability. This incident is a painful reminder of why that vigilance matters—and why we remain unwavering in our efforts to build a culture of respect, dignity, and safety for everyone on site.”
And the Metro Nashville Police Department also confirmed the investigation, revealing that it was found on a restroom:
“Graffiti, racial in nature, was found on a plywood wall of a restroom in the construction site. The restroom has been closed. The removal of the plywood has not yet occurred. Our Specialized Investigations Division is investigating along with the construction company. Yes, the construction site is a secured area, and no, the site is not unsafe.”
It’s been a rocky road for the new stadium that was already controversial among both citizens and elected officials here in Nashville.
The city of Nashville announced back in 2023 that instead of upgrading the current home of the Tennessee Titans, which sits on the east bank of the Cumberland River, the city and Titans would be building a new $2.1 billion domed stadium, which will sit directly adjacent to the current stadium.
But many weren’t happy with the cost of the stadium, or the fact that public funds would be used for its construction.
The new stadium is expected to hold 60,000 fans, which is a smaller capacity than the current Nissan Stadium, and will allow the city to compete for events like the Super Bowl, the World Cup, and Wrestlemania, which has already announced plans to hold their 2027 event in the new stadium. It will also allow for more major concerts, which in the past have been affected by weather due to a lack of a roof on the current outdoor stadium.
