Can’t say I’m surprised.
In the midst of one of the most odd Sunday Night Football games in recent memory, which resulted in a 40-40 tie from the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys, last night during halftime, it was revealed that none other than global superstar and Puerto Rican rapper, Bad Bunny, will headline the Super Bowl LX halftime show on February 8.
It should go without saying that Bad Bunny is nothing short of a powerhouse in terms of global popularity. Beyond his staggering 77.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify (Morgan Wallen has 35.1 million for comparison), he captured the title of most-streamed artist on Spotify three times from 2020-2022, became the first artist to capture a #1 on the Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish language album and has even started an acting career, starring in films such as Bullet Train, Caught Stealing, Happy Gilmore 2 and even making appearances at various WWE events. Simply put, he’s seemingly everywhere.
Despite his global popularity, it still feels like a bit of an odd choice from the NFL. Of course, he’s massively popular worldwide, but for the average American football fan, it’s hard to imagine they know even one of his songs, given the simple fact that the rapper doesn’t have any songs in English. With familiar names like Taylor Swift, Adele, Post Malone, Miley Cyrus and Metallica all being rumored and heavily bet on as performers, Bad Bunny felt like an odd call for many.
Focusing heavily on the fact that Bad Bunny performs in Spanish, some X users even claimed that the NFL is purposely picking acts that its fanbase doesn’t like.
I honestly feel the NFL is having a contest to see how many acts they can have in a row that their fanbase can hate the most lol.
Now we get a halftime show in a completely different language. Awesome.

Does the NFL not know their typical viewer?

Additionally, many were quick to criticize the NFL for booking Bad Bunny due to his past comments on President Trump and his recent refusal to perform in the U.S. during his latest tour after saying he was concerned that ICE could be outside his concert.
“Man, honestly, yes. There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the US, and none of them were out of hate—I’ve performed there many times. All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the US.
But specifically, for a residency here in Puerto Rico, when we are an unincorporated territory of the US… People from the US could come here to see the show. Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the United States could also travel here, or to any part of the world. But there was the issue of—like, f***** ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”
The conversation has already been turned towards the political, and you have to imagine the performance won’t come without some kind of political statement (especially if Trump is in attendance). In an already extremely divisive political environment, you’d like to think a Super Bowl Halftime Show could provide a break from that.
He was just announced as the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show.
– Massive Trump hater
– Anti-ICE activist
– No songs in EnglishHe even canceled his entire U.S. tour for this reason: “F***ing ICE could be outside my concert. And it’s something that we were… pic.twitter.com/11KvuSWnEH

Roger Goodell and the @NFL just decided to make the Super Bowl political by picking Bad Bunny as the 2026 Super Bowl music act.
The guy literally says he isn’t touring the US because of Trump’s ICE raids and just released a video mocking President Trump.
Also, most of his songs… pic.twitter.com/s2KYRzev4b

Some conspiracy theorists are even claiming that Apple (which sponsors the halftime show) chose Bad Bunny to perform simply to promote the new live translation feature on their new generation of AirPods due to the fact that all of his songs are in Spanish. It would sorta make sense for a marketing campaign, but the host city works with Roc Nation, as well as the NFL Entertainment board, to make the call… not the named sponsor. But what else do you expect from the internet?

Finally, Morgan Wallen fans were also pretty upset that the “Last Night” singer didn’t end up getting the nod. If we’re talking about one of the largest artists in the world, one with a lot of crossover appeal… country fans like him, hip hop and pop fans like him, people of all ages like him, rappers and pro athletes are friends with him… Morgan Wallen would be an obvious choice. However, it’s pretty safe to say that a Super Bowl halftime show is pretty unlikely due to his past controversies and the media’s general distaste for him.
But that didn’t stop fans from asking for him while simultaneously calling out the NFL:
I really don’t give a fuck about the Super Bowl halftime performance because it almost always sucks anyway. But Morgan Wallen is the most obvious choice of all time, but the @NFL is terrified to ask him because he said something silly when drunk like 8 years ago

Last year Morgan Wallen performed at a crowd of 156,000 people, a record breaker for Neyland Stadium.

That mute button gonna get worked
Sidenote: imagine having Drake, Morgan Wallen, or Wayne out there and you choose this. Abysmal. https://t.co/xUElw5QcD5

Overall, Bad Bunny certainly feels like a choice straight out of left field on its surface. Morgan Wallen would make a lot of sense, but it’s probably never gonna happen… get used to it.
When you think about the NFL’s global strategy lately, especially when you consider the fact that commissioner Roger Goodell recently said he wants every team to play an international game in the future, the decision to employ the likes of a global superstar like Bad Bunny makes more sense.
While you’re here, check out the last time we got a country Super Bowl halftime show, all the way back in 1994 with the likes of Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, and The Judds.
