A Mookie Betts/Morgan Wallen collab coming soon?

The Los Angeles Dodgers star revealed in a recent interview this weekend with SportsNet LA that he has an impressive new goal — to sing with Morgan next offseason.

Betts is a Nashville native who obviously grew up around a lot of country music, and he has apparently picked up a new hobby and is currently learning how to play guitar. But it sounds like he has some big dreams in terms of his potential to perform, saying he has already learned “Wagon Wheel,” a Broadway staple, and is currently in the process of learning Morgan’s “I’m The Problem.”

Of course, that song is the title track to his mega hit album, and was written by Morgan along with Ernest, Ryan Vojtesak, Grady Block and Jamie McLaughlin. It peaked at #1 on the Billboard U.S. Country Airplay chart.

Betts says he can’t sing, though, and will strictly be an instrument guy, unless it comes to a talking-style song like some old Johnny Cash or something:

“I just started, like, a month ago. I’ve got a couple songs under my belt now, but I’m trying to get to where I can do a little live performance somewhere… I can’t sing, but if you can play the guitar and speak, it sounds good. It really does sound good.”

For only playing for around a month, it sounds like he’s making pretty quick progress, and he intends to get onstage with Morgan and Ernest next offseason for a performance. He added that he’d love to do it in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee, where Ernest is also from. Morgan is of course a Tennessee boy too, hailing from nearby Knoxville:

“Right now, I’ve got ‘Wagon Wheel, ‘I can play that. I’m working on ‘I’m the Problem’ by Morgan Wallen. My goal is to do a live performance with Morgan and my boy ERNEST next offseason. Not this offseason, but next offseason, I’m doing a live performance.

You heard it here first… I want to do it in Nashville, my hometown.”

Betts explained that his dad gave him a guitar, which sparked his interest to learn how to play, and he says he spends anywhere between 45 minutes to two hours some days learning how to play, sometimes even playing on flights to different cities for games.

I mean, he’s gotta be pretty good in order for his teammates to put up with that on a flight…

Something tells me that if he masters “I’m The Problem,” Morgan would be more than happy to have him onstage considering Morgan is a huge baseball fan who had intentions to play in college before he got hurt and ultimately started what has become a very successful country music career.

Plus, with his goal being set for quite a while from now, I’d say he has plenty of time to get really good and I don’t see why they couldn’t make it happen.
