Megan Moroney is known for her sharp songwriting and vulnerability, but this one might be her most personal yet. At a recent performance, Moroney introduced a new unreleased track titled “Beautiful Things,” and it wasn’t long before the tears started to flow. The inspiration behind the song? Her niece.
Moroney took a moment to reflect on what it meant to welcome a little girl into the family and how it immediately stirred something in her as a songwriter.
“I love my nephew… but there’s just something different about seeing a little girl.”
As soon as the thought hit her, she grabbed a pen and started writing. From there, Moroney explained the idea behind the lyrics, thinking ahead to all the difficult moments her niece would inevitably face.
“Oh my God, maybe someone won’t invite her to a party or something,”
Her voice cracked a little, so we knew how real this felt for Moroney.
“She is inevitably going to get her heart broken one day.”
That worry, that instinct to protect, is what sparked the writing of “Beautiful Things.”
“I have to write a song so that she can listen to that when it happens, so she can feel no sadness ever.”
While the song is for her niece, it clearly touches something deep in Moroney too. Maybe even the younger version of herself who could’ve used this kind of comfort growing up. Tears welled in Megan’s eyes:
“I am going to be a nightmare of a mom,”
Yeah, but that’s a beautiful thing.
The song itself is poetic and emotional, filled with vivid imagery and layered meaning. From fires burning canyons to tornadoes on beaches, Moroney’s lyrics create a chaotic emotional landscape that mirrors what it’s like to be young and vulnerable in a world that doesn’t always treat you kindly.
She sings:
“Crying ‘what did I do?’ tears,”
It captures that painfully familiar feeling so many teenage girls and young women know too well. And as the song builds, she lands on a line that ties it all together:
“But honey just take it from me, the world is hard on beautiful things.”
It’s a gut punch. And somehow, it’s comforting too.
“Oh I know it doesn’t feel fair, but I can’t count the times I’ve been there.”
With that, the intention of the song becomes clear. It’s a message of love and solidarity. One that her niece can carry for life and that so many others will likely connect with. And finally, Megan closes the track with a gentle promise:
“You’re gonna be alright.”
Fans in the comments of the performance clip have been deeply moved. The song hasn’t even been released yet, but it’s already resonating:
“I don’t think she understands how healing all of her music has been for teenage girls. Idk that I would have made it through the last couple of years without her.”
“I need this song released right now because I truly related so much.”
“If she releases this, don’t talk to me. I will not be okay.”
Moroney didn’t need to make anyone cry that night, but she did. You can feel every ounce of emotion in the way she delivered it. “Beautiful Things” isn’t just a song. It’s a love letter and a warning, all wrapped into one.
And when it officially drops? Yeah, it’s going straight to the top of my heartbreak playlist.
