The cover I never knew I needed.
Today, Lukas Nelson shared a really cool cover of pop star Sabrina Carpenter’s mega hit “Please Please Please,” which was written by Sabrina along with producer Jack Antonoff and Amy Allen (who wrote on Koe Wetzel’s most recent album, 9 Lives). The song became her first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and also topped the charts in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and the United Kingdom.
Sabrina rightfully won Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards for it, and she put out a reimagined version of the song with her musical hero and country icon Dolly Parton a little while back too, which I’ll be honest, wasn’t as good as the original but I loved seeing them work together.
I’m actually a pretty big fan of Sabrina’s music, and I’ve seen several other country artists praise her music, though I’ll be honest, I never would’ve imagined hearing Lukas sing this song, but I’m here for it.
You’ve heard me say it many times I’m sure, but he’s such a talented artists and I think he could truly sing any song from any genre, make it his own in some way, and still make it just as good as the original. I still have his cover of “Someone Like You” with Sierra Ferrell on repeat… they really did their thing with that duet.
Even if you’re not a fan of Sabrina, or are unfamiliar with her music, I think you’ll certainly enjoy this:
“‘Please Please Please’ – Sabrina Carpenter. When I first heard this song, what struck me was the intro synth reminded me a lot of a Beach House song called ‘Space Song.’ I kept listening and found it to be a brilliant progression and melody… really awesome to see that in a pop song. Respect. A good song is a good song!”
Lukas is also gearing up to release his debut solo album American Romance, and he is of course the son of the great Willie Nelson, who was in a band called Promise of the Real for many years before they went on an indefinite hiatus last year.
What makes it even better is that the record was produced by the great Shooter Jennings, who is the song of the late, great Waylon Jennings and an extremely talented and well-respected producer… it’s so cool to see them working together. The album will be released in June in partnership with Sony Music Nashville, and Lukas already put out two great songs in “Ain’t Done” and “Pretty Much” that have me incredibly excited to hear everything else.
Solidifying Lukas as a solo artist, American Romance showcases his incredible, very honest talent for songwriting that is unlike anyone else in country, but music in general. Lukas definitely has a sound that’s a country/rock fusion, but it seems as though he’s ready to full lean into the country aspect of his roots on this project and I cannot wait.
It’s due out everywhere on June 20th, and you can view the full tracklist below.
