Another preview of what’s in store for his forthcoming record.

We’ve said it before here at Whiskey Riff, and we will continue to say it, but if you’re not getting on the Leon Majcen train, you are doing yourself a disservice. Earlier this spring, Leon Majcen proved to fans he was a songwriter to tune into with the release of his third studio project, Better Days. Majcen hails from the Gulf Coast city of Clearwater, FL, and elements of his coastal background are prevalent in his music, both sonically and thematically.

Throughout Better Days, you can hear the strong influence from other singers and songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and John Prine. His clever lyricism transports you to a specific time or place, creating a full-body image for the listener as the melodies play through their speakers.

That vivid imagery has been carried into his forthcoming studio project, which he recently revealed is titled Making A Livin’ (Not A Killin’), through the singles he has released thus far. With singles like  “Don’t Leave The Light On” and “Down The Road, and the highly personal track, “If That’s What It Takes,” Majcen is pouring his heart into these tunes, revealing raw and honest lyrics that leave listeners not only wanting more but looking inward to see how these songs apply to them. Even if the subject matter is not identical to a struggle or feeling the listener is experiencing, they can draw parallels, finding a way to make it relatable to them.

Majcen does it again with his new single “Shot Myself In The Foot, which, similar to “If That’s What It Takes,” was penned during a hard time in his life. This tune has been a long time coming for Majcen, as he’s been teasing it since May.

“This one’s a little bittersweet for me. Wrote it after a falling out with some old buddies in a past life. Sh** gets a little bumpy sometimes but it all works out in the end. Lost and found my footing with this one, proud and stoked to share it with ya.

Special thanks to brother Pat Lyons for bringing out the good in these songs. Can’t wait for this record to be out. Also stoked to have Julia DiGrazia ripping the fiddle on this one, she’s an absolute legend!”

The song is a tune of self-reflection, noting that although the friendships have ended, it’s not one party’s fault. There is blame to be placed on both sides, with Majcen seemingly taking responsibility for his part in the fallout, noting that he “shot myself in the leg just to see if I’d bleed.”

The narrator of the tune shares his worries and downfalls with his “mama,” asking for advice. The upbeat tune disguises this somber message as a catchy one, hiding the true meaning of the lyrics. This is my favorite kind of self-reflective tune because it not only makes it the perfect song to blast while happy or sad, but it also shows that you can own your wrongs, and life picks up (like this melody) and moves on.

Turn this one up to max volume. Leon Majcen is the man.

Making A Livin’ (Not A Killin’) is due everywhere on October 17th, and fans can expect a much more full-bodied sound from Majcen on this project compared to previous ones.

“I’ve always occupied the folky side of country music, or the country side of folk. For years, I’ve felt most at home when it’s just me and my acoustic guitar. But this record is a pivot. It’s a bigger sound with more layers, more intent, and a real producer. It just feels right.”

Come on with it.
