This one hurts.

20 years after forming in Asheville, NC back in 2005, legendary bluegrass and country music group Town Mountain has announced they will step away from touring following the completion of their existing fall run. Wrapping up what has been an incredible two decades of high energy live shows and spectacular music, Town Mountain’s final show will take place in Ardmore, PA on October 26.

The band took to Instagram Tuesday morning to make the unexpected announcement.

“After two decades on the road and just over 1500 shows together, Town Mountain will be stepping away from touring following our fall run. This was not an easy decision, but it is one we made together with a lot of respect, reflection, and love for what we’ve built.

Our last show will take place this fall, wrapping up on October 26th at the Ardmore Music Hall. We’d love to see as many of you as possible along the way. These dates mean a lot to us, and we’re bringing the same fire and energy you’ve always come to expect from a Town Mountain show…

Whether it’s your first or your fiftieth, we hope you’ll come be part of this run. These shows will be special. Who knows what the future holds, but thank you for being part of the ride. We are forever grateful. -Town Mountain”

This is devastating news for so many fans out there, but I think I can speak for everyone in saying that we wish each member of Town Mountain the best in their future endeavors. The music and the memories from their shows will live on forever, and we are all grateful the we got to witness some of the magic along the way.

As you can imagine, tons of artists and fans took to the comments to express their love for Town Mountain and wish everyone in the band well moving forward.

“My guys!!!! This is heartbreaking, love this band so much!! Wishing the very best for all of y’all on a new path. I am here to say there is life after the band. Y’all blow it out in October, wish I could be there!!! – Kyle Tuttle

“You guys rule. Will always be a fan.” Jesse Daniel

“LEGENDS! Way to ride out in style.” – Philip Bowen

Nothin but love to you guys.” – Miles Miller

“Road dawgs. Legends. Much respect to you all, always & forever.” – Kelsey Waldon

For anyone who is not familiar, Town Mountain formed as a bluegrass band, but there sound evolved over the years to encompass a more traditional country feel in the recordings with a prominent rock and roll edge at the live show. Maintaining elements of bluegrass, rock, and classic country throughout their career, the band garnered a strong following on the heels of their incredible sound and clever songwriting.

Their most recognizable song is probably “Down Low,” a track co-written by founding member and former banjoist Jesse Langlais and Tyler Childers, who contributed vocals to the iconic track. They performed the track together at Tyler’s Red Rocks debut:

Otherwise, if you dig in post the two covers that have become streaming hits as well – Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” and Townes Van Zandt’s “Snowin’ on Raton,” – You’ll find a deep catalog of criminally underrated music that deserves to be heard as much as any of it out there.

Here are a few of my personal favorite Town Mountain songs, that i think every country music fan needs to hear.

“Lawdog” – Leave the Bottle (2012)

“Comeback Kid” – Lines in the Levee (2022)

“Arkansas Gambler” – Southern Crescent (2016)

As you can probably gather from these videos, Town Mountain has always been, and continues to be, an absolutely killer live band. Luckily, the announcement comes with 20 shows still left, so there are a good amount of opportunities for fans to get out there and catch a show before it’s all said and done. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on these shows. Especially since you may never get the chance to see Town Mountain again.
