She got the last laugh.
This week, Lainey Wilson is the cover star for Southern Living, and she sat down for an interview about her gorgeous home on the outskirts of Nashville, her fiancé Duck Hodges, and also what it was like growing up in the very small town of Baskin, Louisiana.
Lainey recently had a highway in Baskin named after her, which certainly has to be one of those “you made it” moments that I’m sure means a lot to her. In fact, she now takes that road to get home to her parents house, which has become her second stop when in Louisiana since she always has to go to Monroe and see her little nephews first.
She explained that it’s the same road she got a speeding ticket on when she was 15 years old (I guess she had her learner’s permit or maybe she was actually a little older? Or maybe she just went for a little drive underage…):
“Same place that I got a ticket when I was 15 years old. I was like, ‘Nana nana boo boo!’ But yeah, my granny lives like a mile from my parents. And I just go sit down with her for a little bit—kind of catch up, take it easy, and do all the things that I grew up doing.
Even this past weekend, me and my sister were cleaning my granny’s house and just doing what we’ve always done. And I don’t know any other way.”
I mean, if she ever gets pulled over there again, it sounds like a pretty good excuse to get out of it by telling the cop it’s quite literally your highway… but in all seriousness, that’s gotta feel pretty good. Nothing stings like that first ticket… not that I would know, of course.
Lainey added that she loves going home because it’s what keeps her grounded, and that it obviously a very important aspect of her career and life now:
“For sure. It just reminds you what’s really important. And this is all very, very important, [meaning] my job, but it’s [also] very important for me to not put all my self-worth into what I do.
I know who I am, the Lord knows who I am, and I try to live by that. I think it’s always about just planting your feet where they are and knowing who you are, standing up for what you believe in, and keeping your people close. I mean, that’s been my method to this madness.”
Lainey has had another big and busy year in 2024, which included being on the road for her extensive Whirlwind tour, and she’s also gearing up to host the CMA Awards solo for the first time.
The 2025 CMA Awards will air live from the Bridgestone Arena on November 19 at 7 p.m. CT on ABC.
The bell-bottom queen is ready, are y’all?
