The next Texan stepping up.
This morning, Koe Wetzel announced a benefit concert benefiting the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund called Koe Wetzel and Friends present Stronger Together.
At this point, we are all familiar with the news that parts of Texas were ravaged by flash flooding over the 4th of July weekend. The death toll has reached 135, rescue missions are now recovery missions, with several people still unaccounted for, and it’s obviously been a horrific tragedy that has affected so many people. But many famous Texans have stepped up to assist those in need, from George Strait, Miranda Lambert and Parker McCollum and more.
Koe’s show will be on August 4th at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas, and will of course feature a performance by Wetzel along with Kolby Cooper, Casey Donahew, Ray Wylie and Lucas Hubbard, Pecos Hurley of Pecos & The Rooftops, Mike Ryan, Shane Smith of Shane Smith & The Saints and Dylan Wheeler.
Tickets go on sale today, July 25th, at 12 p.m. CT, and all net proceeds from ticket sales plus funds raised through partnerships, the on-site silent auction and additional fan donations will benefit the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund via Wetzel’s foundation, Koe’s Kids. Fans who cannot attend the concert but would still like to help the cause can find donation information at KoeWetzelMusic.com.
Koe says that the goal is to bring help and resources to his neighbors in Texas, and he’s grateful that so many of his friends agreed to be part of it:
“Texas is home – these floods hit our neighbors hard and they need our help. Music has a way of bringing people together, and I’m grateful to my friends who immediately raised their hands to help when we called. This benefit concert is our way of standing with the people of Texas and doing whatever we can to make a difference as our great state rebuilds.”
I’m sure they will raise a ton of money for those in the Lone Star State that are really hurting right now, and it’s great to see Koe stepping up to help out.
In addition to this announcement today, Koe released a new song called “Surrounded,” which he’s been teasing for a while and co-wrote with Josh Serrato, Ashley Gorley and producer Gabe.
The song highlights the double meaning of being “Surrounded” both physically and mentally, as Koe feels trapped in every sense of the word following a breakup where he can’t seem to outrun his ex-lover’s memory, especially when he’s drinking:
“I can’t run out, I can’t fight it
I can’t think ’cause my head’s so clouded
Every morning, every night is
All alone but the room feels crowded
Should’ve took all the mirrors you left
Cause I’m drunk and I can’t be around it
Hands up, we’ve got this house surrounded
And there’s nothing I can do about it.”
It’s definitely along the lines of what he heard on 9 Lives, and given the aforementioned radio success of “High Road” in particular, that seems to be the formula he’s sticking with for now as he continues to make a name for himself well outside the independent country and Texas music scene. Of course, he’s been with a major label for a while, so it’s not surprising to see his career take this sort of turn as he tries to expand his fanbase and take it all to another level.
