Not a great look…

There wasn’t much that went right for the University of Kentucky yesterday during their game at the University of South Carolina. The Gamecocks, looking to rebound from a tough loss at Missouri last week, took care of business at home and easily beat the Wildcats 35-13.

In fact, one of the only good things for Kentucky was quickly overshadowed by a boneheaded move from their running back.

On their first drive of the game, Wildcats RB Seth McGowan broke a 20-yard touchdown run to give Kentucky an early lead in Columbia.

But after scoring, McGowan ran to the back of the endzone and hurled the ball at South Carolina fans – who were sitting in the handicapped section of Williams-Brice Stadium.

Here’s a closer look at it:

Well as it turns out, the man who was hit by the ball happened to be the grandfather of Gamecocks QB LaNorris Sellers, who addressed the incident after the game – and ended up getting the ball to give to gramps:

“I saw it. They showed it on the jumbotron and I was like, ‘Oh, yo, that’s my granddaddy.'”

McGowan wasn’t penalized for the celebration, but issued an apology immediately after the game, saying that he was attempting to throw the ball at the hedges and simply missed (to be fair, he IS a running back and not a QB…).

“Today during our game vs South Carolina, I threw a ball after a touchdown meaning to throw it at the barrier in front of the stands and during a high energy moment the ball struck a fan. What I did was absolutely unacceptable and not at all reflective of myself nor this program.

If anyone can get me in contact with the fan or his family I would like to formally apologize to them and make it up any way possible. Also I would like to apologize to the entire fans of South Carolina Football and their program.”

And in comments after the game, McGowan again apologized to the fan and promised it wouldn’t happen again:

“Yeah, that’s completely my fault and I would extend another apology, but on here I would like to apologize to the fans that that ball connected with.

I tried to throw it at the ground and in a high energy moment it kind of slipped out, came out wrong. So absolutely unacceptable and that’s something that won’t happen again.”

Obviously the internet wasn’t happy with the moment, and let McGowan hear about it, but it sounds like Sellers and his grandfather aren’t too worried about it. (Sellers was asked if he had talked to “Seth” about it and didn’t even know who the reporter was talking about).

I wouldn’t expect to see any penalties from the SEC, or the University of Kentucky, for the incident, but I do expect that McGowan will be much more careful next time he goes to celebrate a touchdown.

And hey, granddaddy got to see a win from his grandson and got a football out of it. I’d say it was a pretty good day, all things considered. The post Kentucky RB Apologizes For Launching A Football At South Carolina QB’s Grandfather After Touchdown first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
