Jamey Johnson Says People Still Confuse Him For Chris Stapleton: “Everything But The Checks… Those Go To The Correct Place”

Okay, I can see it…

Last week, Jamey Johnson stopped by Rolling Stone’s podcast Nashville Now, and he told a great story about how fans tend to get him confused with one extremely recognizable figure in country music, Mr. Chris Stapleton.

Of course, they both have long hair and long beards, and are very easy to spot in a crowd… so it makes total sense that fans would occasionally think that Jamey is Chris, or vice versa. Jamey recalled one time in particular when he had flown back from a show into John C. Tune airport, a small airport near Nashville, and he asked one of the employees to bring his car around.

But it sounds like Stapleton must’ve flown out of John Tune airport around the same time, because the valet came back with Chris Stapleton’s keys instead…

“Back before the color left my hair, I flew into John Tune airport one night after a show, and I asked them to bring my car around, and they did. And they handed me the keys, and the tag said ‘Stapleton.’ So I grabbed a picture of that and I sent it to Chris, he said he gets the same s***.”

It sounds like they both got a good laugh out of that one, and the host pointed out:

“So Jamey Johnson gets Chris Stapleton and Chris Stapleton gets Jamey Johnson.”

Johnson laughed as he came back with the perfect response, saying:

“Well, everything but the checks. Those seem to go to the correct place.”

I think we’d all love to get an “oops” Chris Stapleton check in the mail one day. But also, how funny is Jamey Johnson? Anyone in the industry who knows him will tell you that he is hilarious, but even in conversations like this one, or during our conversation with him on Whiskey Riff Raff, you can see it for yourself… the man is straight-up funny.

And speaking of these two, we need another collab again someday soon. They’ve written a few songs together, including “Saturday Night In New Orleans” on Jamey’s most recent Midnight Gasoline album, but the pair also teamed up in 2018 to cover of Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody” for the Muscle Shoals: Small Town, Big Sounds project, and they also performed together in 2020, covering Merle Haggard’s “Sing Me Back Home.”

But a completely original duet would be absolutely incredible…

You can watch the clip where Johnson tells the airport story here:

Jamey has actually been working on a new album, and just released a new song with his friend Riley Green this past Friday called “Smoke,” which they wrote together along with Erik Dylan. Jamey says:

“It was Riley’s idea. He called me and we booked some time to get together with Erik Dylan. We sat down and scribbled it out over the course of about an hour. It has an interesting sound to it, with one part going down while the other part is going up.

I like the whole concept of this guy not being too upset about whatever she is mad at. That smoke probably has a lot to do with it.”

They recorded the song a the famous Cash Cabin, as well as and Big Gassed Studios, and of course, Johnson and Green have a natural connection being Alabama natives:

“There’s a natural connection with us there. I was immediately impressed with his writing and singing.”

Riley covers Johnson’s hit “In Color” at all of his concerts, and has long cited him as one of his musical heroes. Johnson will open for Riley on his Damn Country Music Tour this month for nine dates:
