Paying homage to Charlie Kirk with a beautiful tribute.
On Wednesday, September 10, conservative media personality and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University.
In the wake of his death, an outpouring of support came around the country from the likes of President Donald Trump, the New York Yankees, who held a moment of silence before their game Wednesday night, Joe Rogan, as well as a significant number of country stars, including Jason Aldean, Gavin Adcock, HARDY, Parker McCollum, John Rich, Aaron Watson, Kane Brown, Randy Houser and many more.
Artists like Mitchell Ferguson and Elizabeth Nichols have also penned emotional songs condemning those online for the fact that some are joyous that a husband and father was senselessly murdered. The outpour from the country music space specifically reminds us how powerful music can be and how it helps us celebrate life events, mourn those who are no longer living, and can help us make sense of things that often leave us with questions.
Last night in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the death of Charlie Kirk was weighing heavily on Jamey Johnson‘s heart as well.
While Johnson did not speak at length about his thoughts surrounding the situation, he did dedicate a song to Kirk, saying to the crowd before playing “Lead Me Home.”
“This one’s for our friend Charlie.”
At this moment, fans knew that Johnson was going to let the powerful words of “Lead Me Home” convey his thoughts. Written by Randy Houser and Craig Monday, “Lead Me Home” is the final track from Johnson’s 2006 album, The Dollar, and a song he will typically play at the end of the setlist, sending the crowd home with a beautiful acoustic performance.
“Lead Me Home” is a very profound gospel song that details a person’s journey to heaven after death. The song offers a sense of peace to the living and profound hope that there is life on the other side as Johnson sings the words: “I have seen my last tomorrow…My new life begins with death.”
But the song as a whole is more than that; it’s a celebration that, although some might be aching with pain, they can find comfort that the deceased is with the Heavenly Father above and is not in pain or suffering on Earth.
“All my burdens are behind me
I have prayed, my final prayer
Don’t you cry over my body
‘Cause that ain’t me, lyin’ there, naw
I am standing on the mountain
I can hear the angels’ song
I am reaching over Jordon
Take my hand (Take my hand), Lord, lead me home”
“Lead Me Home” is truly one of the most moving songs in Johnson’s catalog and is a loud proclamation of his faith as well. This is a beautiful performance, and a voice like Jamey Johnson singing these powerful words makes it pack an even harder punch.
Rest in peace, Charlie Kirk.
