The Caitlin Clark effect is no joke.
To put things simply, Caitlin Clark is women’s basketball. She completely and single-handedly elevated the game, and brought more eyes to women’s sports than any other female athlete… ever. Clark now plays for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever, and she continues to be a star at the pro level, though many will always remember her as an Iowa Hawkeye.
That is until she’s able to further supplant herself as one of the WNBA’s all-time greats. And I think that will happen sooner rather than later. Her game seamlessly translated to the pro level, and she’s continued to enforce her talent and deep-range shooting in the WNBA. Fans love watching the talented guard do her thing, and she’s brought unprecedented attention not only to women’s basketball… but women’s sports as a whole.
Ryan Brewer, an associate professor of finance at Indiana University Columbus, found that of the $200 million in revenue that the WNBA brought in in 2024, Caitlin Clark was single handedly responsible for 26.5% of that revenue. In other words, Caitlin Clark’s success and story is helping cash the checks of others across the WNBA, and strangely enough, many other WNBA player couldn’t care less.
But that “Caitlin Clark Effect” is now on display in another, more unfortunate way. The Fever star went down with an injury at the end of May, and after being diagnosed with a left quadriceps strain, Clark was ruled out for a minimum of two weeks. She’s currently going on week three of being sidelined:
That’s very unfortunate, both because everyone would prefer for the young star to be doing her thing out on the court, and because with Caitlin Clark out… it seems like WNBA fans have also ruled themselves out.
What do I mean by that? Well, USA Today reporter Jeff Zillgitt reported that WNBA television ratings across the board are down a staggering 55% since Clark went out with her quadriceps injury. Obviously, those numbers should pop right back up when Caitlin returns – whenever that may be – but an over 50% loss in viewership just because one player is hurt is simply insane.
For all those people (including players and coaches in the WNBA itself) saying Caitlin Clark isn’t the sole reason the women’s game is growing, please point me towards some evidence. This latest trend in ticket prices dropping and ratings plummeting while the Indiana Fever star out sure seems to point towards Clark driving ticket sales and WNBA viewership… but hey, maybe I’m missing something.
Most importantly, I hope that Caitlin Clark can heal up quickly and get back on the court pretty soon… because if you haven’t caught a game of hers yet, she’s an absolute superstar.
And though the WNBA and the Indiana Fever might be missing out on having Caitlin Clark playing, the Fever’s NBA counterpart – the Indiana Pacers – are benefiting from having Clark in attendance at their games in the NBA Playoffs. The Pacers just recently took a 2 to 1 lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals, and they haven’t lost a game when Clark has been in attendance at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Anything she touches turns to gold.
