Pat McAfee will alway side with kindness.

The former NFL player and sports personality always ends his Pat McAfee Show with a sign off of “Be a friend, tell a friend something nice… it might change their life.” That’s the stance McAfee has always taken, and the one that he’s always stuck with, even when he’s had criticism thrown his way.

And it’s the one he’s going with in this latest, weird internet controversy where people are upset that someone said something nice to someone else. Go figure, right?

Following the Jacksonville Jaguars heartbreaking loss to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, Jags head coach Liam Cohen was taking time to speak with the media. After a season where the Jaguars exceeded their expectations, and got to host a home game in the playoffs, their impressive run came to an end.

You could tell that first year head coach Liam Cohen was upset about it all, and the loss was still weighing heavily on his shoulders. Longtime NFL reporter Lynn Jones, who works for the Jacksonville Free Press, took time out of the media availability of the head coach just to tell him that he should be proud of what he and his team accomplished this season:

“Congratulations on your success young man. You hold your head up, all right? You guys have had a most magnificent season. And you did a great job out there today. So you just hold your head up, okay? Ladies and gentlemen, Duval, you the one, all right? Keep it going. We got another season, okay? Take care of much continued success to you and the entire team.”

What’s wrong with that?

Well, some journalists out there have been quick to condemn Jones for what she did, most notably the AP’s Mark Long. He said that the people who credentialed her should be embarrassed, and that taking time to say something nice to a coach like that after a game is “a waste of time for those of us actually working.” You can double check me… he actually said that. Another NFL reporter said it wasn’t Jones’ job to console the losing head coach.

That’s obviously caused some outrage, and there might not be a person out there angrier about the whole thing than Pat McAfee. Since he is someone who is almost always a proponent of kindness prevailing, Pat was really happy to see journalists speaking out against Lynn Jones were getting their comeuppance:

“Love seeing these sports ‘journalists’ getting ABSOLUTELY BURIED for being curmudgeon bums. OBVIOUSLY NOT ALL OF THEM but a LARGE percentage of these things hate sports. They hate what sports are for people (happiness). They hate what sports are for society (unifier). They’re political journalists by nature who’ve preyed on sports because they saw it as an easier path to ‘make it.’

Sports are the greatest thing on Earth, these mother******s have no idea… and will never get it. Also, thank you Lynn Jones for setting up a situation for me and all of us on how Liam Coen, a man who might be a GOAT when he’s done, handles compliments during one of his most miserable moments. He handled it with class and humility… feels like some journalism was actually done there.”

I agree with that 100 percent… and based upon the response on social media, a lot of other people do too.

Pat McAfee even took some time out of his show to address the situation, and his exclamation point on the matter was asking who journalists think they are to condemn something nice being said to someone else:

“What a weird thing to come out publicly and say, ‘This is disgusting.’ Who do you think you are?”
