George Strait Dropped In At Small Town Charity Event In Colorado This Past Weekend, & Played In Front Of 400 People
Nothing like an unexpected drop in from the “King of the Country Music.” The days of George Strait playing small venues are long gone… or so we thought. The days of George Strait playing small venues are long gone… or so we thought. Evidently, the “I Cross My Heart” who is used to playing stadiums at this point in his career makes some exceptions every once in a while. The latest example being a small town charity event in Gunnison, Colorado that the living country music legend was nice enough to grace with his presence.
“Gunnison Tough” is a community program that provides comprehensive cancer support programs. They help support those impacted by the disease, and provide both relational and financial assistance to those fighting cancer. They describe their role in Gunnison, Colorado as the following:
“Gunnison Tough is dedicated to providing comprehensive cancer programs to keep our community strong. We serve residents of Gunnison and Hinsdale Counties of Colorado including Crested Butte, Almont, Gunnison, Parlin, Pitkin, and Lake City.”
Their latest endeavor was the 2025 Songwriter Shuffle. A number of singers and songwriters played throughout the night, but the night’s huge surprise guest definitely stole the show. A couple hundred people that were there in the room were floored when songwriting legend Dean Dillion brought his longtime friend and collaborator, the one and only George Strait, to the stage.
“A surprise from the King himself! George Strait surprised 400 lucky fans at the charity event in Gunnison, CO over the weekend.”

How cool is that?
Though having the King stop by is certainly a highlight, the biggest win of the night was that Gunnison Tough raised over $1 million dollars to help provide support for those fighting cancer. They proudly announced the final number in a statement on their website… and also bragged a bit about getting George Strait to come to the event.
Why wouldn’t you? It’s not everyday that a star of Strait’s stature drops in at a small town charity event:
“Thank you to everyone that made the 2025 Songwriter Shuffle a success! We reached our goal of over $1.1 Million. The amount of support, enthusiasm, and love that poured out from each and every one of our sponsors, guests, volunteers, Almont staff, Gunnison Tough staff, donors, and board members has filled our hearts and fueled the future.
The big SURPRISE GUEST, George Strait, was a highlight, suitable for the celebration of 20 years of the strength, love, and determination of our community to provide to our family, friends, and neighbors in need while going through cancer.”
Shoutout to George Strait for helping out, and obviously a big round of applause for those at Gunnison Tough who are helping to fight the good fight against cancer. The post George Strait Dropped In At Small Town Charity Event In Colorado This Past Weekend, & Played In Front Of 400 People first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
